Buy off the pic

  1. Started on an other feed but thought it will be interesting to see who else is a "buy off the pic" VW owner. I bought mine off a famous auction website (we all know which one :) ) and drove 500 mile round trip and have never looked back.

  3. me too ,nearly all my past buses ,never regretted any....But I can weld fast... ;D

  4. Yes, but only because it was a cheap import and I was expecting to do 'everything' on it anyway. It still exceeded my expectations, 'everything' was even more than expected.

I wouldn't buy a modern car or restored old car / van off pictures, too many things you can't see and too many people around who are economical with the truth in their descriptions.

I bought mine from a friend of a friend after seeing a few photographs. No MOT or tax and I had to get it home (400 miles) on a trailer, it was much worse than described and it didn’t have the engine in it that I was told it had. Still, four years later and every panel replace or repaired and a rebuilt engine and new interior…

Yep. Looked at the first 2, then bought the next 3 from photo's. The last bloke insisted I came and looked, so I did to humour him, but the deal was already done. :)
I can weld too so nothing scares me - but not as fast as LEF.

  7. My beetle I bought from someone in croydon, they had it advertised at 2500 but I promised it would have a loving home with me and is fix her up and make her better... So I managed to get it for 1800! Only had 2 pics to go off...but I'm glad I did coz I live her x

Anybody who buys a van based on piccies alone is foolish

note to self for future reference, when Michelle goes away for the weekend, dont go out to the boozer on a saturday night & peek on ebay when you get home.

We bought Gusbus blind based on pics and four years later still got nowhere fast :-[ although the end of the tunnel is nigh!

You have to observe the other rule - cheap buses are rusty. So price and pictures.

I bought my Bay from an English guy in Spain via Ebay without ever seeing it in person  however, i was swayed by the fact it was a Laurrie Petit engine and i also spoke to the existing owner before the auction ended. We got on well and found thru looking at our Ebay previous purchases we had a shared dislike of the poll tax and so i then trusted him :)

We had to get the van home on a tow truck and as i pulled up the tow truck driver ran up to me before i had seen the van or the owner and secretly told me in Spanish he had listenend to it and looked at it and said i was making a good purchase! :)

  12. merlin , if that van had factory fitted windows it would have been in my garden weeks before yours...

Funny how life turns out... >:D

It is more exciting seeing a van first time in the flesh at you home....

  13. I bought mine off the pic. The seller had taken loads and loads of photos of all the problem areas. And the bus was in perfect condition. What more could you ask for? So I pushed the Buy It Now button. Sure, the bus was 12000 miles away in Australia but that didn't stop me. And a few weeks later, after arranging shipping to the UK, she arrived looking even better than the photos. Gamble really did pay off. But there is a lot of luck involved. You never know. Until it arrives. I remember the delivery driver pulling up with the bus on the flat bed, jumping out of the truck with his first words 'have you seen under this bus?!'. My heart sunk and I thought he was about to add 'it's rotten as hell'. Luckily he said 'It's like it just rolled off the factory line!' Phew.

Loads of stuff of that site but the bigger things are a doblo from up that Southport took 5 trains and forever to get there and the other Is the T5 which we got of the new bristol rd in Weston Super Mare and then broke down after only 80 miles but that's VW's
