Butcher or Surgeon

  1. I have 2 late bay buses, , both without engines/boxes a 1973 and a 1976 but both RHD and almost entirely rust free with all panels doors etc almost perfect. They are the left overs from a couple of projects I was doing. The problem is although I have reg papers they are 20 years behind with licence etc and in South Africa it will take forever/be impossible to get them back on the system, so i cannot use them or even export them complete as I will not get an export permit. I am sending a 40' container with 2 cars in later this year, so am contemplating cutting them up and sending as spares: sacrilege I know for such good vehicles. I can remove all doors beams suspension etc, but the question is where to cut? If I cut it into 3 ie roof and front/rear cut is it feasible to join it together again, or should i cut it into smaller pieces. Any bright ideas?

Seems a shame to have to cut them up, they look pretty solid

Do you really have to cut them up - can't you just strip down and export as body shells ?

  5. Unfortunately no, or I would be making a fortune! The SA government stil has strict export/import regulatios, all personal imports have to have a specific permit, and they only issue a few a year. It is to protect the local manufacturing base, and also ForEx control. I brought a Supra twin turbo in 2 pieces via Swaziland about 10 years back to get round it :)

just for info are there many of these vans still out there and what sort of price do they fetch? i just wondered why more aren't exported as being rhd they would suit uk roads better than all the usa vans we have.

Cut through the middle of the chassis/ floor where the factory weld is and chop the roof off, 3 big pieces, fairly straight forward to weld back together

Or chop off the front clip to infront of the B pillars , can you get away with that. If all other removeable panels are taken off ?

  9. There are quite a few, some areas still use them as minibus/taxis. As for prices , as everywhere, going up exponentially at the moment.

  10. My thoughst exactly, but chopping into 3 means i can pack it in a container round 2 other cars and send it for free!
