Hello nice folks. I have finally begun work on my bus, starting with the fuel lines, however when chasing the breather pipes I found it to end like this above the engine (centre of bay, coming from the left side)... ..and coming from the right (above battery).. ..with this pipe "removed" (holding it where I assume it used to live).. ... from what I gather the pipes used to be connected (presumably in a 'T') and are supposed to go somewhere but, after many hours forum surfing, I can't fathom where or how. Ideas? ..more info.. the engine is a "AD" code, twin-carb, which I believe has been swapped in as the bay has an air box bracket sitting empty. Thanks in advance, (and apologies if I sound like a n00b ('cause I'am))
Those breather pipes come from the fuel tank go up into the air intakes and connect at a T over the top of the engine . Then has you guessed to the missing breather box then off to the carbs .. you can just connect to the filter on the carbs if stuff is missing... sure someone will link to the picture with bits of hose to replace soon.. just doing mine but it's a crew cab so a bit less to do... page one of this thread shows a useful diagram that may help you http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/avoid-a-fire-everyone-should-read-this.38433/ I think breather pipes originally vented into the oil bath air filter (which you don't have/those with twin carbs don't have). Someone with better knowledge than me will be along in a while to advise you
Thanks for the reply I saw that thread and followed it but everything after part "15A" I can't work out where that'd go to in mine since, like you say, it should go to an air filter which i don't have and I'd rather have faith knowing it goes somewhere rather than leaving it going nowhere, which for all I know is a recipe for disaster (or i could be wrong).
I'm sure i saw somewhere where it was piped into a nipple on top of air filters such as mine, but mines lack that nipple...
Now that makes sense to me ... Would I be right in assuming the obvious.. pipe coming in from the left is the Fuel Breather, and from the right is the Crank Breather? (sounds like a dumb question, but I'd rather sound clueless than be clueless)
No! The 2 pipes along the top of the engine bay join together with a “T” piece and go to the air filter. These are the tank breathers. Oil breather is the bigger diameter pipe next to the oil filler. (Yours has a silly little filter on it which will gradually cover your engine bay in oil, and wont provide the negative pressure your engine wants).
The 2 thin breathers on the roof of the engine bay are fuel, the crank breather is much fatter, and comes from the oil filler under the dynamo.
Right, thats where the confusion came in then, just been to look at the engine again and I believe the afore mentioned filter has already had a spew .. however I cant see the "bigger pipe" just fuel lines and wires, am I missing it, or is it missing? EDIT: after re-reading posts, checking pics and face palming ... do you mean to pipe should be coming out of where the "silly little filter" is? Oh dont worry, you'll have plenty chances to jump on my stupidity
The oil (crank) breather pipe is missing because someone’s put that little filter on. Take the filter off and replace it with a piece of pipe to one of the air filters.
My face-palm moment came just in time for this reply . Right, So if I'm finally picking up that penny I dropped .... My fuel breathers need to be fixed back together into a 'T' and fed to my left air filter, and that stupid wee filter needs replaced by a good hose to the right air filter, correct? Being that this is a mess and I doubt there are standard parts for this work, would anyone recommend a specific type of hose for the oil breather?
Something like this but check the length you need: https://www.heritagepartscentre.com...tFuj-hu-qEO89Og6kEpYdKPTPTlmQccwaAkGtEALw_wcB
Thank you lot for the help, glad I asked my dumb questions now ... Will update once it'd done .. or if I have more dumb Qs
