Breath pipe/leak pipe in rear wheel arch leaking petrol

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by sjhjoinery, Mar 3, 2012.

  1. As the title says theres a pipe coming out of the rear of the rear O/S arch which seems to be leaking petrol, well its wet and smells of it, Also someone following me pointed out the leak. Thought it was smeeling abit but as I've just fitted a propex and not sealed the holes thought ity was coming through that.

Whats the verdict easy/ nightmare fix?

Oh its an prototype bay ;)

    Thanks Scott.

  2. Sounds like your fuel filler kneck has perished

Engine out to do it im afraid

  3. It's possible to do with engine in but not easy. It involves a lot of swearing and contortion, and you need to do a good job of binding up your wrist (use gaffa tape). You have to do it all by feel, but it's doable.

    Don't forget to swear
    :)

  4. Bugger the pipe goes behind the air filter and up above wheel arch where filler neck is.
    :'(

So do you take the firewall out and access it from there. How much is a new filler pipe?

Drama, Just as I thought a nice day out with the luxury of a propex newly fitted.

Do you mean a small metal pipe high up in the compartment?

Like Paradox suggests it does sound like your filler neck pipe as it's the O/S. There is however one join before before it reaches the pipes that take it high into the air vent. Pop the black disc off and feel for wetness around a
Join. You'll have to use your sensory skills to feel it. If the tank is brimmed you'll feel the moistness of it.

What engine?? T1 or T4?? If it's a T1 it's a cow to replace engine in. T4 and it's not quite do hard.

    Keep us posted.

Pics too small and dark to see anything matey. :)

  11. i'm not familiar with e.arly bays, but that looks like its a breather pipe from the filler neck? Here is a pic of the tank with breather pipes, if its the same one then it looks like yours has been modded to come out from behind the firewall?

Try not filling the tank so full?
    :)

That's what I was thinking Joker - the pics aren't good, but I don't have the pipe next to the filter stand... Thinking again yes I do.

    Is it a 68?

  13. I only put £15.00 in, so didn't really fill it.

Will get some better pic's. Can you get the fire wall off without taking the engine out,
    Its a H reg so 69/70 I think,.

    Scott.

It is the overflow from the filler. You haven't said if it leaked at the time you filled up or later.

  15. From what the person said who was following me, It was dripping as I was driving down the road.
And the whole 20 mile trip home I also had a smell of petrol, but put it down to the 2 holes I'd drilled for the propex and the fact I still hadn't siliconed them up.

I'll look harder at mine tomorrow for you. It has the same pipe, but I only followed it enough to see it existed!
I'll take some pics tomorrow and see if that's enlightening. :)
