Yup, cheers then Zed, was hoping against hope that it wasn’t that but every cloud as you say.

They almost look as though they have been welded and ground down….

That was actually my initial thoughts too. Would anybody on here run with a drum like that? I’ve never noticed it before and to be fair, I hadn’t noticed it today, but it was the eagle eyed troops / reinforcements that spotted it. Has it been like that for ages ? Has it always been like that? I’m so cheesed off right now, I just don’t know what to think. C.S.P. disco kit maybe. NEw drums are one and a half each and I’d want a pair. It’s getting spensive now.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, Any words of wisdom my sage like peers ?:)

  5. Ozzy give it a clean up with some scotchbrite to remove the fluid residue then if you gently heat the drum up whilst looking at the suspected crack.
If it is a crack you will most likely see muck bubbling up out of the crack.

It will only be slight so you will need to pay close attention.

Have you measured the drums to see if they are still in wear tolerance?

Bud, I’m not sure what that residue / muck is but it don’t seem to be more than surface deep but it’s definitely in the metal. I’ve rubbed it down a tad with some wet and dry but it’s still there. To see it in the flesh it looks a bit like crazing and the more I clean up the more it’s mucked up. There’s some second hand drums on eBay for fifty quid and twenty five postage for a pair. Still undecided I’m afraid. It’s got me proper hissy now.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, I’ll sleep on this tonight.:)

When I bought my 68 I breathed a sigh of relief that it had new rear drums, they were about £250 each! Gone down a bit now - £350/pair. TBH I don't think they're even listed right, I remember 67-68 being one year only with a narrower shoe hence the price, now the same drums are listed as 67-70 and I'm sure that's not right. Buying brake parts has become a bit of a nightmare, it seems like suppliers will sell you whatever they have and gloss over it being wrong.

Look at the brake shoe for a matching pattern of metal strands in the matrix.. it could be the drum got surface "heat treated" when a red hot or hotter corner of a dragging shoe came to a stop.. it doesnt look continuous across the drum like a crack would.

Looks like a weld because the surface was changed by the heat..

Dye in solvent would find a crack...drip ink .. printer ink. on it.

Im pretty much resigned to it that it’s a crack. I could buy myself a crack test kit for less than twenty quid, that’s a three part one too. They’re pretty conclusive but in my head after looking at it with my plus three readers and a magnifying glass,,, it’s a crack.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,let’s see what’s up Sloff then .:)

  10. Dangle it from your finger and tap it with a hammer. If it rings like a bell - no cracks. A dull clonk means it's cracked.

  11. It could have been a fault in the casting and the weakness has let it crack
It could possibly have been like that for a long time
Your right to replace it though fella.

Last chance saloon. I’ve had several messages from peeps saying they have some. I’m off to go and look at some of these locally to me . One friend offered me his pair but I’m pretty sure he’s squirrelled them away in case he ever needs them, that’s nice. Got another very good friend says he has a spare or two. I’m off to see him in a minute or so.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,maybe Ozziedog will go to the ball :)

Right, just come in and we’re driving up tomorrow in a mates daily. It’s fighting me all the way. Got another drum with loads of meat on it off of a late split . Exactly the same as mine but dosent have the three grease cap getter offer lumps. Managed to get most of it back apart from the drum as I’ve taken an absolute age to get one race out so one more to go. The fixed pipe through the chassis is a tad awkward and the pipes nut wouldn’t swivel and looked cantankerous and about to be naughty where it connects to the new flexi , so I stripped the back plate off again and spun everything to tighten that joint then put the back plate back on and bolted it back up. The fixed pipe between the cylinders insisted on popping off the back plate by an eighth which was fine until I put the shoes on with the springs and they rubbed on the pipe so pulled it all off and apart AGAIN.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,, too close for a nicely :)

Rang like bell Senor Snotts, showed it to a few more experienced engineering types who came to a similar conclusion that once seen, you can’t unsee it. But got a replacement now.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, Everything was dear at Slough :)
