Bottle Jack

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by sharpey, Feb 26, 2014.

  1. Is there a particular bottle jack that I should buy. The one I have, although rated for the bus' weight, only has a small base and as I try and lift the bus with blocks etc, it tends to move (even on level ground) causing it to tilt and becomes dangerous.

Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong......pics would help!!

  2. I use a 6 ton bottle jack and a block of wood on top, engineering brick or block of hard wood underneath. Never had any problems with it being unstable.

  3. I believe mine is only 2.5 ton so maybe it's just has a too smaller base

  4. I also have a small bottle jack for travelling and it has only small base, but then so did the one that vw originally provided. The important thing is to chock the wheels on the opposite side of the bus so it can't roll. If you're working on say the right rear and chock the right front wheel, when you lift it the front tends to rise a little so the chock will be loose. That's about all i can think of. Much better to have a trolley though not so handy to lug about.
