Bosch fuel injector loom woes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Nick Sherwood, Apr 30, 2018.

  1. Hi. Bought an imported 1976 US Westy last year. Had a fantastic year - wish we’d done it earlier! We live in Birmingham, UK.

Van was over-wintered in our garage and went to a local VW van “specialist” for a routine service and MOT 5 weeks ago.

Long story short the engine was removed to replace a leaking gasket and wouldn’t run properly afterwards. After 4 weeks problem has been pinned down to a decayed wiring loom on the Bosch fuel injector system that is shorting and messing up the fuel supply (you can tell I’m NOT a mechanic!).

The options I’ve been given are:
    1. Try a used loom from an old van
    2. Replace / rebuild loom. Apparently the mechanic can only find one place that does this and it takes 10-12 weeks!
    3. Replace the fuel injection system with normal carburettors

After 5 weeks I’m getting a bit desperate!

    Questions:

    Is this all plausible?

    Are the options realistic?

Is there only one UK company that makes replacement looms?

Many, many thanks in advance for your time in replying...

    Cheers

    Nick

  4. Just to close this off... couldn't get a loom so had to change to carbs. Took the garage 9 weeks to diagnose and sort this out!

  6. I made my own loom and had intended to make more so did buy some extra bits.

If interested I can have a look to see if I have all the bits to make one up.

Sorry not been on the forum much past couple if months so hadn't seen your initial plea for help!
