From the front jacking points to the rear valance I have scraped as much of the black gunky underseal off as I can Next job will be to don my long rubber gloves and mix up some white spirit and scrub with wire wool and brushes to remove as much as humanly possible. Then its ready for paint, then once I get the welding done the underneath is good to paint in one shot. With hindsight i would have been better to get it blasted as this has taken ages and was really messy. I think that blasting would of shifted it...
do you want some floor cuts mate, i'm just going to chuck them if not, they need cleaning up, but are solid!
Bet she didn't help though. I know mine didn't lol I hate underseal. Got exactly the same on my resto. Even the og orange paint!
Ok small update from the wknd Front beam is made of cheese So madpad is kindly selling me a spare he has in good condition Then I continued cleaning up the underseal, finally rid the wheel arches of the gunk... Front left wheel arch Front right wheel arch Rear right wheel arch Rear left wheel arch Next degreasing engine bay and cargo floor undersides (and beams..)
Doing a great job and seems you're doing it right. Continue to check each piece as you go, cause you never know what lurks under those O/P patches. LOL
Despite the progress beginning to feel that my plans for summer getaways in the bus are slipping away Numbers of things have contributed to it - Engine rebuild spun out to full on line bore costing weeks in delays (still waiting for heads... But no hurry now) - Delays with the engine led to itchy fingers with wire wheels on grinder - Above exposed more stuff todo - Delays encouraged me to pull the gearbox to clean up around there - Above caused me to find the fuel tank strengtheners bad rotted out - Pulled fuel tank - may as well cleanup and seal it - Removing the underseal is taking ages.. Fingers crossed that I can get it finished before end of season.. The plan is to: Epoxy mastic entire underside Repair the couple of chasis holes Replace the front beam after cleaning it up and epoxing it Cleanup gearbox replace fluid and obvious seals to improve gear change Cleanup and seal fuel tank and pipes.. Repair fuel tank bay and epoxy mastic Epoxy mastic / maybe primer the engine bay Rebuild the engine Rebuild the rear brakes Replace the flexible hoses (hard lines look ok) Right hand side sills replace Epoxy Primer upper body repairs Maybe left hand side sills replace... Or leave to off season... Repair holes on steps.. Save as much I can Repair bubbles on front panel Repair underneath roof rack at rear and epoxy primer (just surface rust hohoho) Get MOT! There's probably stuff I plan to do but forgot - there probably stuff ill discover and have to do Sound achievable? For August... September... Next year?
Still degreasing the underneath... Just the front cab section remains to be done no pics as it would be like spot the difference. More importantly took a trip to madpad to pick up the beam Looks pretty good to me og paint in places and the trailing arms and ball joints look good - just need to: - cleanup up the new beam - strip down my old beam before removing - remove and weld my servo mounting plate to the new beam - paint everything with fe123 and then black enamel paint - fit the new beam with lashing of copper grease (as per shielsy) - install my hubs and brakes etc (check them over first too) Thanks for showing me round hour bus, its sweet! Smelled lovely of fresh paint and dinitrol mmmm And thanks for the generous donation of rear lower quarter panel much appreciated
Loving this thread, keep the pics coming! I'd recommend getting rid of the disposable welding bottles. You WILL get the hang of welding. I went through about 20 disposables. Now I just rent a big hobby weld one, works out waaaay cheaper in the long run. And a £35 refill is the equivalent to 20 disposables. I wish I had of done it in the first place.
Cheers Karl, very soon we will find out I see that justkampers now do hobby weld do you have the 9l tank? Enjoying your thread you're setting the pace for the rest us
Cheers mate. I dont know what litre tank i have, but its about 3 foot tall. Called hobby weld 5. Argon/co2 mix. I think theres a pic of my welder set up in my thread somewhere. How easy was it for you to get your beam off? Ill be dropping mine soon and im told its a hard task. Lol
dropping a beam is not hard , u just have to make sure everything is un bolted , i thought i was ready and dropped it onlt to find i hadn t disconneted the gear leaver and bent it , owen nw
Almost ready to drop it - it hasn't been too bad so far - just need to remove the master brake cylinder and servo. The worst it bits were all the rusted on bolts - needed a little heat and the impact ratchet to move them. The front gear rod was tricky not sure if I just did it all back to front but it needed a lot of teasing to separate.
W We used the hobby weld set up - took 2 bottles to do front panel and bottom six inches all the way round plus other bits. You need a regulator and adaptor from regulator to welder if your using disposables at the mo. I just googled hobby weld to find a supplier near me and they set me up with the kit.
