Best Place For Gas Cylinders?

  1. Evening all,

As I am about to fit a gas hob/grill and fridge I was wondering where I should put the gas cylinder. My Devon interior has room for a 4.5kg propane cylinder in one of the cupboards but is this safe? I know caravans have external storage and have a vauge memory of reading somewhere that the gas storage should be isolated from occupied space. Is this true?

I have seen some external gas hook-up points, rather like the water or 240v items with a flap fitted to the bodywork but these are really designed for external BBQs. However they do not have a 1-way valve so could in theory be used to connect an external cylinder to feed gas into the vehicle. As long as I fit a securing point to the bay, such as a towing eye, the cylinder can be locked up with a bike chain to stop anyone taking it.

    Any thoughts please?

  2. Might be worth making a external vent in the storage place, just in case..Westys gas cylinder is in the bottom cupboard ,I used to put loads of junk there too...

as LEF says, inside is ok if you put a drop out hole in the floor, (gas being heavier than air) i would avoid a cluttered area (i know loads put crap and stuff in with them - dodgy idea) keep all pipes fastened securely and all is well, i too looked at those bbq sockets and thought the same, best plan is to fit a westy underslung gastank.

  4. Cheers guys.

A Westy underslung gas tank? Now that sounds interesting, any idea where I can get one please? I tried googling but no luck yet.

they were standard fit on american spec' vans, you just have to keep your eyes out on ebay or the forums, i took mine off when i got the van as they look ugly but i may one day re fit it as i need the space inside.
