Best oil

  1. Hi All
Just wondering which oil is best for my T2
    Bay 1974 type 1 engine 1600.
And would it help in cold starting in winter months
    Cheers.

  2. I use Comma 20W50 in my 1600. Oil is cheap so change it every 3000 miles or twice a year. Works for me.

  3. Dangerous post ;)

15W40. If your van is having trouble starting, is the ignition ok, is the automatic choke working?

The oil that stays in the engine is the best.

    Personally I go for Mazola.

  11. Oil with a decent amount of zddp is best. But more important is regular oil changes. 15W40 is good. Duckhams still do the original green classic oil. Or a cheaper option is Halfords classic

How do you get oil to stay in the engine?
I reckon if they'd had any oil in Colditz, it would've been the first thing to escape!

I've been "worrying" about the fact that my type 1 1600 doesn't lose oil .... THAT can't be right SURELY?!

  14. No, perfectly normal. It may burn it, tho’

The worry then is its being topped up with petrol from a leaking carburettor.

I only really notice oil level dropping when i do something like the 450 mile round trip to Dubfreeze ( distance increased by going an indirect route)

I take solace from our long term average mpg of 30 (wait for the nay Sayers ) ... that "suggests" no petrol leaks?

  19. 30 mpg is achievable on a sympathetically driven stock 1600cc
People bang on about twin carbs etc but the stock set up ain't too bad - A to B is a bit slower but I don't keep the van to go fast ...

..we don't have much of an interior either, so no hefty westyness!
