Best engine spec for a good all rounder

Im approaching the stage of my resto when Im forced to think about the best engine specification option..

My van has a type1 1600 tp motor basically factory stock .

Im probably not going to use the van every day but would hope to use it as a tourer fairly regularly, mostly on single carriageway A roads and remote B roads, with a bit of climbing and frequent stop start ( passing places) if the recent trip in a hired van is anything to gauge the future by.

Im not sure about the spec of the engine that was in the hire van, but a swifty under the engine lid showed a twin choke carb and a mondo type back box... The van didnt have a massive amount of pep but it did make some pretty steep and steady climbs between 2nd and 3rd ... it did get a bit tired on a long steady dual carriageway climb where it was struggling a bit in 2nd.. Watching the tacho it seemed to be happy around 3500 rpm and a wee bit revy toward the 4000 mark...

Any ideas for a good strong pulling, good all round engine build ?

Make it as big as you can.

  3. Do you ever watch Jimmy de vile ...engine addict ?

How to get 715 bhp out of a 2.5 Volvo 220bhp engine ? Bigger *****Ing turbo !!

All new cars are going down on cc but up in bhp .....turbo

A new mini 2ltr turbo 200bhp in standard form

Build a bullet proof 2 litre type 4 and add a turbo

If I start with a good 1600 case, are there any decent cranks or is a stock crank as good as it gets... are stock twin port heads OK for most barrel /piston combos.. any big valve heads that can be considered, Im not after a screemer or huge top end speed, just a good strong puller that can maintain 60 odd mph if needed and you dont need to shift down to 1st or 2nd to get up your drive .... Im not looking for exotic carb set ups but wont rule out a twin carb if it needed to get the thing to get out its own shadow..

Looking through some engine stuff It looks like barrel and piston sets are available from stock 1600 up to and exceeding 1775.... but are all the bigger bore parts suitable for a 1600 block? if you go 1775 what cam do you use... etc etc ...

anyone built a good solid motor with more oomph than a stocker yet retained reliability and useability, just releasing the stock engines potencial for better performance in modern traffic...

Im not looking to drag the thing just get a wee bit better all round performance ...

with heat being a killer of air cooled motors fitting a turbo would create more and cause more problems ?

    Thinking more practicle..

  6. 1776 is a good engine .anything from 60 -100bhp depending on heads and carbs .heads and case will need machining plus full flow oil

  7. Hi I built a 1641cc with Engle 110 cam in an AS41 case with a weber 32/36 progressive and it pulls 70 no problem, ok its only in a trike, in the progress of building a 1760cc, that has 87mm pistons with a 74mm crank and an Engle 120 cam

The chap who is building my T4 engine likes to build 1776 as just that - change barrels and pistons, run with standard carb with std jets, standard cam. He would do a 3 angle valve job to the heads and you have to be sure you haven't got Mexican heads with smaller valves. Std TP should have 35.5mm inlet.

sounds pretty expensive and not doable without machining... is there masses of work required? whats the extent of the machine work?

so as per above, does he need to machine the 1600 block and heads to suit the barrels ...

  10. Anything about 1641 needs the case and heads machined.

  12. with a 74mm crank and 87mm pistons which are the ones used for 1641cc with a standard 69mm crank you get 1760cc and no machining, thats why I am building one as it can all be done at home

  13. Pretty sure you can only get away with 1641 cc without machining ....it's the case and heads ....you could ring someone like TES to get a machining quote or ZEDs mate rob .

I bet that makes a nice engine. The deck height is about right with stroker pistons?

  15. I have a 1641 and had it up to 70mph (not for long though). I like it as it is still a simple setup, keeps cool without any extra bits and still handles hills OK. It does have twin ICT34s.

  16. I should point out here that a stock 1600 will do 60mph with no fuss at all, and 70 or over (but doesn't like it)...
