Beetle engine case in a bay

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Paul Matthews, Dec 9, 2023.

  1. Hi all, my bay has a beetle engine case. Is there a problem with having a beetle engine case fitted to a bay?

Do I need to have any particular mounts or adapters so that it is mounted correctly?

The reason I ask is that it has been fitted but it doesn't look like it sits correctly and is leaking from the bell housing even after changing the flywheel seals.

    Any advice would be grateful!

  2. Really only thing you'll need is an adaptor for the rear engine support backbar. A bus engine can't dangle from the bell housing. Have you got one?

That's not the reason it's leaking.
It should sit correctly without the rear support, more likely the rear tin is out of shape if that's where you see a problem.

  5. I wasn't implying that was cause of the leak. Just answering the "mount" question.

I know that. :) I was talking to the OP, I'd have quoted you otherwise. Apologies if it came over like that.

So it has the pump adapter.
What do you mean by "not sitting correctly"?

As @Zed says... what seems wrong?

Has it always leaked or has it just started leaking badly , or is it new to you ?

The oil pump bracket is designed to match exactly where the bolt holes would be in a bus engine. While its not as solid as the bus engine mounting arrangement would be, its not a reason to be concerned, I drove 27000 miles with a bus engine where the case had corroded around the rear fixings so it was potentially weaker than yours.

The engine normally points slightly down to the front of the bus.

Check the smell of the oil coming out and rub a little between two fingers . If it stinks of sulphur and feels sticky then its gearbox oil - the input seal on the gearbox goes hard and leaks especially if the bearing in the centre of the gland nut is worn, letting the gearbox input shaft rattle around.

If you miss out the O ring inside the flywheel nose, the engine oil can go across the face of the flywheel and the clutch..

    Engine oil leaks....
The flywheel seal will leak if there is a wear groove on the nose of the flywheel that lines up with the lip of the flywheel seal.
The seal has to go in flat or it will tend to leak.
If you have substantial end float it will tend to leak more too.

  9. That looks pretty dry compared to a lot we see on here

    I have a ‘74 1300 beetle case converted to a 1600 in my van.
I used the adapter plate you have fitted, but I had to grind down the ‘lip’ of the original pump cover to stop it fouling on the adapter plate to make a snug tight flat fit to stop it leaking like yours. I did it while it was out and all dry. It just didn’t look right to me, so I just took the step to make it fit. It hasn’t leaked from there.

I found the raised corners on the original pump cover plate too high for the adapter as it wouldn’t sit properly, so I ground them and the edges, down a bit. Sits all nice and even now. This may not be the same problem, but it don’t leak from there.
