Beetle electrickery questions

  1. Hi all

Had a day off today so finally had a chance to look over my 65 bug to see what issues I have and what needs sorting before I start using it as my daily.

First issue was offside brake light. Working fine until I put lights on. Then when pedal depressed instead of brake lamp coming on, sidelight went off. Found some connectors inside engine bay which I disconnected and reconnected. Seems to have solved the issue. Surely it can't be that simple?

Next issue is dash board lights. Before I start stripping out wiring etc, I wondered if I am thinking along correct lines. When I insert and turn on the battery isolator but not ignition key, the red charge and green oil light come on. They go off as normal when ignition is started. Am I right in thinking that these have been wired to constant live rather than through switched live? Is there a way of testing the charge and oil lights to make sure that they come on if there is a problem?
Also the blue main beam light comes on as soon as ignition key is turned on and is unaffected by turning on main beam other than a slight dimming presumably because of increased load. So is feed for dash warning light likely to be on wrong connector of switch?
Finally, (for now:D) the wiper only seems to have one speed which seems very fast and they don't park when switched off. Were they this basic in 1965?

    Thanks for your help..

  2. Brake light is likely poor earthing on the fitting. With no earth, current takes some strange paths through the other bulbs.

The charge and oil lights should be wired to an ignition-switched live on one side.

You'd need to look at the wiring diagram for the wipers. I'd imagine they should self park. How many connections has the wiper motor got?

  3. Yes, think I need to find a copy of wiring diagram so that I can try tracing the wires.
The wiper motor has three terminals.

  4. Any good?

  5. Thanks @snotty. That will give me something to work with.
