Beach buggies / custom beetles

Hi all

Went past one of those beetles with no bootlid and the big chrome tubular affair round the engine and wondered how come these engines and those in the beachbuggies don't have be in a sealed compartment like ours do for the cooli ng to work?

 

I would say because they are more "out" than "in"

I think crawling in traffic can be interesting as the hot air circulates. But out in the blue yonder massacring a sand dune SSSI at 40mph plus there is no problem with cooling....
