do i need a new alternator ? 1600 mexican engine. brand new battery leaking egg smell. just swapped for a another new battery. help.
think it's a regulator. Got new carb fitted. Had same problems last time I went for a long drive. Garage said my regulator was fine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you have a multimeter, run engine, measure volts across battery. Should be 13.7v (ish). If regulator duff you'll get 17v or more if you rev it a bit.
When my regulator went I was getting 19v at the battery! Drove 50 miles home on a sunny day with the lights, windscreen wipers, fridge & stereo on and everything was good
As others have said, but I had a problem a few years ago with a overfilled battery. Battery acid would flow out of the breather tube after switching of engine and the temperature rising in the engine box so expanding the volume in battery. The overfilling was caused by rain water coming in via side air vent and settling on the top of battery and seeping in the filler tops. Solved by putting a plastic cover over the battery top. My moneys on the regulator overcharging.
