Balance weights on steel wheels

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the crumpets, Feb 17, 2014.

  1. Hello again everyone,

Very quick question, I have had my new tyres and wheels balanced and now they have these whacking great weights on the outside of the wheels. Which now look as ugly as sin.

When I questioned why they are on the outside the bloke said that they have to be on the outside.

Is he right and I have to look at them or can they be put out of sight on the inside of the wheel.

    Thanks again

No, it's just the easy option! I had all mine fitted to the inside.

Except the one I had replaced and forgot to ask!

  5. Nope, they can be put on the inside.

  6. Thanks for that, now for a small engagement to get them to change them to the inside :)

The ones on the inside tend to be stuck on - and are thus more expensive.

There is a lot of mass in the wheels and tyres (standard steel wheel and tyre is around the 20kg mark) so they do need a fair amount of weights if off.

If madly off, is the wheel straight?

? Alloy ones are stick-on, steel hammer on, so it won't have done the paint any favours. It's not that much harder to put them on the inside, but you still may need some outside depending on how clever the balancing machine is. Putting them all outside is pure laziness, the bloke needs telling off.

Reminds me of taking a newly painted wheel up to have a tyre put on and the first thing the bloke did was drop it.

  9. I balance my own. :)

  10. I'm guessing the next thing that happened..
    You dropped him? :theforce:

I've got stick on ones on both sets of my steel wheels - I asked the guy to not put the rim ones on as it would bugger the pain.

Ha! no sadly he's a sort of mate and wasn't charging me so it's difficult to get shirty. I let him know I was "disappointed" though. ;)

  13. can you balance them by leaving them on the rear for a month or is that just a myth?

They will balance easier and with less weights if they are fitted to the outside.
