Avoid a fire, everyone should read this

Discussion in 'Buying a VW Camper' started by Chrisradioman, May 11, 2014.

  1. Did all the accessible breathers and fuel lines in the engine bay / under van with R9 in the spring. I assumed this was going to last years. Will the breather pipes last for years as they dont mix with the petrol. How long is the fuel filler neck pipe expected to last. For £50 I would expect this to last more than a couple of years

Last question my bay window is a 72/73, looking behind the paint tin lid it has the additional breather pipe coming from the neck but it also has the expansion vessels in rear corners along with the usual breather pipes. Is this normal ? I assumed the breather on the filler neck vented directly through the filler cap without the expansion vessels fitted

    R9 won't last years.
Plenty of stories of it breaking down within 12 months.

  3. Looks like the bio fuel option next year then.

  4. Near Chesterfield in Derbyshire - not found one yet :( Used a guy nearby (at Alfreton) that I've been going to since I had my beetle in 2001, but I've had as many bad/slapdash experiences there as good ones. The VW garages in
Chesterfield have closed down, making the nearest in Sheffield - which is far enough to catch on fire if it's peeing fuel out :(

    Do it yourself.
It really isnt difficult and at least you'll know its done correctly.

  6. Having been prompted by all the scare stories in this thread i decided to change my fuel lines today. I knew the old ones weren't too great, but I was horrified by what I found:

This was the section of pipe from the pump to the carbs! You can see where chunks of the outer sheath have fallen away, exposing the braiding beneath!

I thought I'd test it in water to check for leaks:

Scary when you realise this part of the pipe is under pressure from the pump!!

Only two words apply, methinks: disaster averted!

  7. Changed Just in the nick of time

  8. How old were they???!

  9. Hard to say really... they were on the bus when I bought it 18 months ago. There were actually three different type/makes of pipe in use.
    • The piece from the tank to the pump was VW branded and in good condition... it must have been replaced most recently.
    • The rotten piece pictured above is 'Alfagomma' branded R6 but is not dated.
    • One of the pieces to the carb was marked 'suitable for unleaded R6' and was dated 2010 - this was OK.
    • The piece to the other carb was the naff Alfagomma R6 stuff.
The new pipe is bio friendly and is supposedly good for 25 years, but I'll be checking it every year just in case!

  10. advice please..... just checked my breather pipes, cant believe it, but there's a piece missing, its in the engine bay, both metal pipes, one ends in the middle of the roof of the engine bay{if that makes sense] the other just ends at a v shaped metal piece , again up in the roof of engine bay, now can i just join these together , with some r9 that i have spare???? or is the pipe supposed to go some where else???

They need to be joined with a "T". The third end goes to your air filter.

  12. Thanks very much will sort that asap

  14. I want to tap my breather off the T into my air filter, anyone have any links to the correct piece and size I need on the filter to connect the the pipe.
    Cheers

When I removed the fuel tank it was sitting on two square pads and a strip of what looked like under felt, also between the straps and the
tank there seemed to be some similar material any advise as to what the tank should sit on and what should go under the straps,
Woed os caution my van had all new fuel lines ones in 2010 if you look closely they are all cracked and perished so a new kit has been ordered
to replace them all with eco safe lines !

As fuel line seems to last about a year you've done well getting 4 out of them!

  19. Thanks for this thread. Looked at my fuel line connectors and they were crumbling! Nice new ones on now and the van's stopped stinking of petrol, which it thought was normal!
    Still stinks of oil, mind!

  20. Done my engine bay ones today, the red one on the left is a bugger without removing the light cluster. (Had clips eating into it as well!)
