So, i just realised although both my van and car are autos and i had an auto jag years ago i've never driven an auto in the snow.... anybody got any tips on this 'cos if you don't brake you'll continue to drive in an auto, if you knock it into neutral you'll have no engine braking.
I used to use the auto box in the Jeep as a manual when we drove in snow. I just shifted down to lower gears on descent of hills to avoid breaking.
Old people don't normally drive there car's in the snow ;D Do as Noddy say's big ear's and use it like a manual as you still have 123, you will have to watch it though as you said as you won't have any engine braking and it will want to keep going! It will be an experience!! ;D
Another good tip is to find a way to turn the traction control off. This will keep power to the wheels. They will spin more but at least it won't stop when you need it the most. My 330 convertible was and auto and worked well in the snow.
it wasn't really about getting through the snow guys, i worded it somewhat crappy, what i'm trying to work out is because in effect with an auto you're always in gear unless on the brakes how's the best way to remove drive if you slide? it's not like you can dip the clutch..... thinking now i'm awake, turning the traction off will make it worse actually pulling away surely? yep i'm well aware that i can leave it in 1 or 2 so it doesn't change up and cause spinning but the traction should help that, it's more stopping i'm trying to work out with no engine braking?
although as an edit with 18 inch 40 profile tyres with the grip of a baby holding a bag of cement i doubt i'll get further than the end of my drive
Theres new legislation coming in 2014 which will prevent manufacturers from fitting any buttons to disable traction control
My campers an auto and I've never had any problems even in 3 ft of snow, i don't see what the problem is here Here it is
