Automatic choke replacement

  1. I have a new automatic choke element(?) it's the bit with the coil of metal inside. I got my book 'how to keep VW alive' and flicked to the page about choke and he says he won't tell me how to fix it because he doesn't use one!!!

Looks pretty plug and play but anything I should watch out for?

Thanks for your help on previous things too I will offer assistance one day when I am more knowledgeable!!!

  2. Plug n play about right just check chokes operate in unison as it warms up

  3. Mr Muir had a bit of a thing about auto-chokes - who knows why? Some stuff in the book needs taking with a pinch of salt.

Replacing the elent is pretty straightforward - just engage the oblong hole in the thermo spring so that the choke plate is shut at normal (room) temperature. Twizzle the element such that the plate's just closed. Turn the ignition on and hold the throttle lever so the stepped quadrant is released - after a few minutes the element should've heated up and opened the choke plate fully. Might need to tweak it a bit by loosening screws and rotating the element, but the main thing is that after a bit of a heating, the choke plate turns so that it's vertical.

  4. Spot on

  5. Thanks done it this morning took me longer than expected though as dropped one of the spacers down the back, then it went down into the lower engine bit  had to make a temporary one out of a little plastic wall plug so it's all good
