auto box reluctant to change into third

  1. afternoon all
van finally back together after its engine rebuild and twin 40idf’s. the auto box has always been fine but now seems reluctant to change into third at the normal point. it’s had a gearbox fluid and filter change - wondering whether the garage used the wrong viscosity atf? any ideas?
    TIA

  2. If you search on here for 010 troubleshooting guide that should give you something to think about. The guide has been posted on here, but I don’t know how to post it directly at the moment. I’m assuming from your avatar it’s the later mechanical, non vacuum transmission.

If you’ve changed the carbs then do you still have the solid cranked rod from the auto box? That’s where the adjustments are made to the shift points.

  3. thanks andy. i’ve replaced the linkage with a bowden cable that runs through a metal tube. might well be that that’s causing the problem. thanks again

  4. I’d never considered this before but the cranked rod needs to be solid as it serves to both push and pull the mechanism. A cable will only pull.

  5. i’ve only replaced the part between the gearbox and carbs linkage and the spring provides the return action on the cable.. the accelerator pedal still connects to the lever on the gearbox which also has a spring on it. you’re right though that i think it’s my home brew linkage that’s causing the problem rather than a problem with the box. i suspect it’s something to do with the movement ratio at the box end compared to the carb end. many thanks
