Our first camper (1997 ish) was an Ozzy 2L auto and served us well for 22,000km trip round Australia over 3 months. We left from Perth, travelling anticlockwise across the Nullarbor Plain, calling at all major cities, Aires Rock and back again. No breakdowns but carbs were by adjusted one mechanic when we kept experiencing flat spots. It turned out that a second (unknown) fuel filter was blocking. I met the funniest bloke ever in Katherine, just outside Darwin. Katherine had just been hit by some major floods (the flood debris was still evident in the trees). This guy told us a brilliant sob story about how he'd gotten separated from his family, lost his house, his car, had gotten tetanus, dodged crocodiles but had managed to save a few precious possessions in the flood, one of which turned out to be a VW cylinder head, which he then tried to sell to us! Brilliant. This epic tale at least earned him a beer. Australia seems well established for travellers and has plenty of free sites outside of the cities to stop over at. We found these to be pretty safe. We had a possum visitor on one occasion and only moved to a secure site in the Northern Territory after being circled by the natives a few times! We only needed the Roo bar when a somebody reversed into us just outside Canberra.
