If I were to fit a radio Ariel that clips to the top of a sliding window that is then insulated by the rubber channel from the door frame. then connect this to the the centre of a coaxle cable, then remotely earth the outer of the coaxed, or indeed the radio, would it work?? or not!!

  2. Yes. The body of the van will act as a ground plane.

Good, I thought there would be an electrickery reason why it would have to be earthed by the Ariel for some reason

For the centre bit could I just use normal automotive cable??

  5. It doesn't need a positive and negative in the conventional sense. The antenna will pluck signals from the ether whatever. The outer of the coax should be grounded to the body of the van which, as above, acts as a ground plane.

  6. Use coax to the antenna. It needs to be screened.
