Are you happy in your work?

  1. The reason behind this question is that I've got 2 part time jobs (totalling just 3 days work per week), but I'm not particularly happy in either for various reasons. I've just been looking at the direct.gov.uk job website, which showed around 980+ jobs advertised in the last 7 days within 10 miles of where I live. About 98% I could not do or would not particularly want to, and of the remaining 2% I know if I got the job, I would get bored very quickly, and be back to square one

This has been the same for me for several years now, so I've started a mental list of people I know who are happy in their work, to give me inspiration, that although I'm in my late 40s now, there is still hope that I'll be happy in a job one day! I've collected 3 so far. Anyone else care to add to my collection?! You never know, it might inspire a career change for me!

  2. The good thing about my job is im never in one place to long and after 3 weeks i get cabin fever , there are good days and some not so good but mostly its ok its the people that make all the difference to a day

  3. Nope, Bored poo-less, it was alright for the first few years but 12 years in, there's very little challenge anymore.

    Me , i drive lorry's at night - lonely , good pay , easy work , not happy !

  5. Yep I love it ,work mates are great and so's the company ,they have treated me so well :)
Job itself is really rewarding as well as were a newish team ,just love it.
    I work for the Co-op improving warehouse's I.T support.

  6. I've been working in primary schools for cough cough quite a few years now. Spent most off my time in the reception class as a TA/LSA and I used to love it but I am staring to not too now. Besides the TA I am a dinner lady too sorry lunchtime supervisor cos I'm a man.
I have done the TA nvq's but it didn't make me do my job any better.

Starting to think what else can I do would love to work from Home.
    :)
My other part time job is a good un working for the local government when it comes to polling time. Lots of hours in a short time but well worth it.

  7. We can work from home as well Rusty but I actually prefer coming in and meeting people and chatting to them ,wierd isent it as I thought I'd love that :headscratch2:

Yeah, I love it - couldn't be happier.

  9. Ah ha ha ha ha! Happy at work?!?!?!? Ha!!!!!!!! Oh dear!!!!

99.999% of people will never be happy at work. I'm not. I've got a good, reasonably well paid job. At the mo. And I am completely bored. Utterly. Doesn't help it's quiet currently but it's soul destroying and tedious. It's making me lazy because I don't do much through the day and then carry that on in the evening and weekends. God. It's awful

  11. Yes, happy with my work because it's my own company. I was never happy when employed by someone else.

Working from home is hard, especially with kids. I did it for 6 years to save money, but rent an office now and it's much easier to get work done.

  12. Dunno what I want to do, I'm not the most off cleaverist person im nearing my mid 40's, TA wages arnt that great so don't need to earn much to cover my wages, outgoings arnt that big we managed too clear our mortage off last year.
Fancy selling stuff from home but it's finding the right thing there's loads off people doing it now.
Can try it and keep my job running at the same time too see if it works out first..
    Come on give us ideas.

  13. Interesting responses.

That sounds great Congi - being busy, rewarding work and nice people really helps.

Owen - another self employed person to add to my list (the other 3 all are)

I like the idea of self employment, but not sure I can motivate myself enough (and wouldn’t actually know what I could do!). And working from home sounds good in a way, but it means work is always there with you, and for me having people to talk to is important.

Stuming - I like to hope you’re wrong, but I’ve not collected a huge list of people so far that are happy!

Majorhangover - that’s admirable, sticking with it for 12 years! I did 4 years at my last place and was nearly insane by the end for the same reasons.

Rusty - you and me both! I’ve been thinking about retraining but don’t have a clue as to what - and some courses are aimed at school leavers, so no hope of oldies getting on them.

Zed - I agree but at least finding something you enjoy makes it more tolerable!

  15. I find it's good to have lows (work for some) as it makes you appreciate the highs

  16. I really love my job being a mechanic, it can be boring doing servicing all day that is why i chose to do the more challenging job's like engine changes and diagnostic work, it really helps if you have people around you that you get on with and can have a laugh with, :D
The only problem is I don't have the motivation to work on my van or the polo's when I get home from work or at the weekend because I have been working on cars all day! :)

  17. In retrospect I was happy at my job...naturally we all bitched like hell at times when doing it...desperate for leave...got it saw all the poor sods at home...only too glad to get away again. ...back working with mates, bitching again. Great stuff :))

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

Yes thanks but then I only do an odd job here and there, now and then.

  19. Loving it, started own company two years ago, still lots of highs and lows and at times would earn more working for some one else but things are getting better the more established I get but it's exciting and mine
Worked 20 years as welder/fabricator and will never look back, be nice to be a bit busier tho :)

  20. Whoever invented the concept of work wants a kick in the trussocks or flange (delete which is applicable) :arrggh:
