Anyone seen this before?

  1. Went into the garage on monday to get the camper out and my steering wheel had cracked. the two sides of the plastis would fit exactly together if you could pull them together as it if has contracted and split. The steel bar in the centre is fine. Very strange. it is 3 years old. I contacted C&C and they spoke to Just Kampers ( its their part, sold by C&C) who could not help. Surely this should last more than 3500 miles and 3 years.

    Can anyone offer a solution?

Just shows Parts might look the part but are actually rubbish. Bought it from C&C over JK as they had a good rep. Never mind.

    What Zed said.
They have been known to cave in and replace them after the warranty has expired though....
(Thats JK by the way, not C&C)

  5. Tried talking with JK, no joy.

looks like i am giong to have to try to repair it. Any suggestions for getting a good finish anyone?

  6. Same old story = modern badly made junk.
My bus has its original steering wheel (like lots of others on here) still working well after 35 years. I wonder what they knew 35 years ago that they don't know now? They knew to get them made in Germany not Taiwan. or China, or ...............

Mine was cracked like this at the bottom, complete with a gap, and missing some fragments of black plastic from the underside as well.

I assumed that at some time in the last 30 somethng years somebody must have suddently slid off the drivers seat and tried to put themselves through the wheel.

Maybe its just stresses built up in the plastic as it cures after moulding.

I used standard Isopon filler and then primed and painted it black , and wrapped the whole thing in 10 metres of 10mm wide black leather strip.

That was a year ago and it has held up.

This is better than golf club grip tape and PVC tape which covered the mess before.

  8. My origonal steering wheel was in an aweful state. So bought it a shiny new one. I am getting more and more fustrated by the aweful quality of parts we are being supplied by companies who are supposed to be in there to help us out.

For a part like this to last less than 3500 miles this is pretty aweful. I will think very carefully about where I spend my money in the future.

    Rant over but not forgotten.....

  9. My orginal steering wheel had cracks at the base of the cross arms just near the centre boss.

The way I went was epoxy putty, sanded back smooth, two coats of spray plastic primer and then 3 coats of finish - flattened with w&d 1500 grit between coats.

I went with VW Alpine White finish coat to match the roof, bumpers and wheels - looks great and feels solid.

If they wont replace it stick a steering knob/spinner over it.

  12. Just bought a secong hand wheel with this exact problem. I bought it damaged so no axe to grind there. Whats the best fix. Just fill and paint it? The cracks have only opened up a mm or two!

  13. I have 2 cracks on the thick middle parts of the wheel ... It still works fine and the metal.inside isn't damaged either... Just leave it or cover with those knob things

  14. My original one had a few age related cracks, I used p38 sanded it down and painted with plastikote gloss. Hasn't been tried and tested for long but seems ok :)

I don't know much about the new wheels that crack, is there a time limit to how long it will continue to crack? If the OP fills and paints it, will another crack appear soon? Would he be better off leaving it a while to finish shrinking, cracking or whatever it is doing?

Here is my filled and sprayed wheel anyway. [IMG]

  15. I might as well fix it before I fit it tbh. My old bus many moons ago had a leather cover which was nice and grippy. Might see what I can get. Any suggestions for thst one too guys n gals.

  16. di you paint the whole wheel or just touch it up?

  17. Whole thing mate I edited my post above while you were typing :)

Josh at Just Kampers comes on here regularly, why not point him in the direction of this thread & see what he says about it..he is showing a good impression about sorting customer woes out, which can only be a good thing!

  19. Im wondering how well the paint will stay on there! Might just be tempted to localise the repairs.

  20. I will paint it again if it wears off rather than pay £100-00 for a new one to split
