Anyone Recon Heater Motor?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Pony, Nov 24, 2013.

  1. Or know of anyone who can? Mines thrown a bearing and gone up in a cloud of smoke.
I d preffer a recon over a 2nd hand, at least I ll be sure its got a new lease of life.
Failing that, does anyone know of an alternative motor, not too bad a job removing the flange and fixing to alternative for the manifold.
    Cheers peeps

  2. Anyone know tec spec for the above. Have found one brand new $16.95 aus. 3500 rpm 25 watts. Could be a bit grunty:s

  3. Which motor are you talking about @Pony ?

  4. What's been found so far...
Crispy! Damn shame those brushes are tip top.

  5. Still non the wiser...is it the snail fan blower ?

  6. Hot air blower, Type 4.
    We have a winner.
Looks like the brush holder broke and some debris got into the armature and knocked one of the plates from a segment so it was bridging between the two.
Inline fuse didn't blow, that's a melted mess.
Gonna take a while to demist the windscreen tomorrow morning.

  7. Would it be a benefit to the heating system if the fan blew faster?

  8. Yep

  9. Best to try someone like Megabug or FBI for a second hand one.

There are places that fix and rewind motors, but yours looks like toast. Used probably your best bet.

  10. I'd really like it to, its just the wattage, I don't want to be putting in summat that'd be able to whinch out a Landy that's up to its sump in mire. :)

  11. Now there's a question....it'd benefit if the air it draws into the intake is already pre heated....(recirculated)....it'd warm up faster.
Fitting a bigger blower will just move the air thru the exchangers faster...
VW will have done a shed load of research and testing to match the fan characteristics to the heat exchangers' thru put....I'd stick with stock or a very similar equivalent tbh...but i'd also investigate recirculating the heated air from the cab back to the intake on the fan

  12. any squirrel type fan with similar cfm rating will do....but check the dB rating for any replacement as they can be fookin' noisy....anything on Fleabay without these ratings on aren't worth looking at...

  13. Good point vanorak, I was considering if the higher rating would have an) detrimentle effect as to too much airflow. Although it would be nice to feel a little more airflow at the vents.

  14. reducing the size of the vent outlets would have the same effect...
once the exchangers are up to temp. pushing more air thru them won't reduce the heat output...just deliver more air at higher pressure....
If you wanted to be fancy, and your new fan is compatible, you could fit a dash controlled potentiometer before the live supply, so you can adjust the output on the fly....
maybe investigate using switches from a donor car?

    Pony likes this.
  15. That would be a good idea!

  16. That's given me some food for though vanorak, thanks for the advice. I ll be looking into your suggestions further, that's for sure.
