Anyone help with an engine code?

  1. Hi all

Emboldened by support from on here I decided to get stuck in to the horrible oil leaks on my engine. I haven't had my camper for that long and so am finding my way around it. Thing is, I bought it from what I understand to be a decent outfit down near Brighton as a 1977 two litre. Before buying loads of gaskets etc. and getting stuck in I thought I would track down the engine number to make sure I am ordering the right bits. My engine number starts with AW which makes it an 1800 doesn't it? Before I get a) upset with the guy I bought it from, b) start ordering bits I thought I would get advice from you guys.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Cheers

  2. chances are it is 1800 ....very slim chance its been rebuilt as a 2 litre but you will not know unless to open it up . there is an engine number on the fan shroud and one at the base of the crank case breather ,the correct one is the engine one .gaskets wil be pretty much the same

  3. I got the number from the area to the right of the distributor as you look into the engine compartment, a bit hidden by the fan housing and in front of what I think is the breather. It matches the V5 where it lists the engine number as an AW and the capacity as 1973cc. Given its an import this could have been an error at first registration in the UK I guess

  4. I will be sticking up a new thread of the "look at my lovely engine" sort, but the punchline to this one is my bus is indeed an 1800. My motor has been rebuilt by St. Laurie of Pettitt and arrives back next Tuesday. Yippee!!!!!!! Is he a star or what. Thoroughly excellent rebuild for way less than a Remtec short engine.

Loads of things were wrong with my engine but I am fascinated and horrified to report that it had 3 out of four knackered exhaust valves, guides and knackered springs hence mega burning oil because the pretty new new heads had valves that had not been properly seated from new. The Porsche & VW garage "darn sarf" that rebuilt the top end for the previous owner had not even lapped the valves in! When I bought Myrtle I got a bunch of receipts so I have a very clear idea of what had been done and clearly the previous engine builders couldn't even do the basics. Still not impressed by where I bought the bus from either. Loads of issues under the skin now I have got my hands dirty.

    Unbelievable.

At least my bus is relatively rust free and I can sort oily bits.

Dude -I'd chill on the issues - it's an old vehicle. I had a bus in the workshop that was £33,000 6 months before that had "issues" including a knackered engine. That's the way of old vehicles I'm afraid.
