Any tips for removing stuck rocker covers?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by popester63, May 5, 2014.

  1. Decided to check my tappets today - dropped rocker bails ok but both covers are stuck solidly to head. Have tried tapping with a mallet, prying with a screwdriver etc all to no avail and don't to do any unnecessary damage.

Anyone have any tips for the safest/easiest way to get them off - I am guessing that the garage that serviced the bus last slapped gasket sealant on :-(

    Ta muchly.

If tap with mallet didn't do it you'll have to carefully prise them off. A good example of why these shouldn't be fitted with sealant.

  3. Cheers Zed, will persevere and new cork gaskets will go back on dry.

Or with the merest smear of grease. Perhaps your bales aren't as springy as they once were. Replacements are cheap and solve most leaking rocker cover issues, maybe that's why the sealant was used. Either that or it was a "normal" garage that didn't have gaskets in stock and wanted the job finished.

  5. If you can get a drift behind them, try tapping them off.
