Any Latebayers in Kingston/Surrey who can weld?!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by mattw, Oct 28, 2012.

  1. Just discovered some rust under where the fuel tank sits.

Just wondered if there was anyone local who could help me out by welding a plate in?

Beer tokens would of course be provided :)

  2. Where are you talking about? potentially that is an engine out job or at a minimum gearbox off.

  3. Engine and fuel tank are both in my shed already :)

Therefore I suppose it would have to be someone when could come over to mine!

I also have a couple of smal holes in the near side battery tray :p

  4. Do you have a welder?

  5. ...nope :D

If you don't have a bulging wallet, DIY is the way forward.
I hope you bought a big enough welder...
It's time consuming, but not rocket science - Good luck and enjoy.

As with everything, practice makes perfect...everyone started from scratch at some point..as Zed says, it's not rocket science...

Get yourself lots of scrap metal and enjoy..

  15. Yep plenty of scrap pieces to practice on

and a good selection of grinding discs

  16. I ended up getting a Sealy Mightymig 150.

Goes down to 30A which is low enough for bodywork (apparently!)

It is currently gassless which I'm going to try out as it will all be done outside, even though people say it is more difficult. It can be converted easily to gas though so gives me the option!

I'll stick the results of my practising on my resto thread....should be interesting :help-sos:

  17. Save your time and convert it to gas straight away, you'll get much better welds. Prep is crucial, and paint or rust or waxoyl or underseal near the arc will contaminate the weld, prep everything properly and you'll pick the basics up quickly. Have fun.

  18. Have u had a go at welding yet?

  19. Yeah gave it a go on Saturday......I'm not very good though.

I think more time practising is the key and spending some time adjusting the settings.

I ended up getting some good weld penetration and even managed to butt weld two pieced of steel together (although I blew a hole in the middle I was unable to snap the weld by bending it afterwards)

Going to try a local bodyshop to see if they have any damaged panels that they would be throwing away that I could practice on.
