another type 4 heater motor question!!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Austin, Oct 29, 2013.

  1. Hi all, so this evening I've actually managed to start and finish a few jobs on old bleu, one of which was to get heating working on the fan.

I've successfully identified the cables connected to the heater motor, and it now works, but my question is this, is that motor spinning all of the time? If not when does it stop? And what starts it again? Never had a type 4 engined bay before, so this may be simple, but I dont know much about these heater motor things.

    Cheers

    Austin

  2. Mines got a dash switch.

  3. Originally, it was controlled by the levers in the cab so the fan ran when on max defrost. Mine is controlled from a dash switch.

I like having control by the switch so that I can get what heat there is into the cab.

  4. On an original type 4 engined bus the fan is switched on by an electrical contact on the heater lever that operates the heat exchanger flaps. ie when it around two thirds down the contact is made. This brings in a relay, normally attached to the fan itself which will only normally operate when the engine is running (mine sometimes sticks and you can hear the fan motor run as soon as you turn the ignition to the run position. Hope this helps.

  5. Hi Austin,
Is yours working all the time ?
There should be a fused live in the engine bay and a earth on one of the red dash heater leavers which makes the circuit when as above is moved down.

  6. Just re-read. Is the relay there or has it been wired direct. ?

  7. cheers for the help guys, that explains what i should be looking for, was hoping to look at it again tonight, but i wasted my time fitting seatbelts that were too short to go round a human being, then cutting a shaping a piece of wood to fill in the hole where the gas furnace used to be.

    ill check it out saturday.

cheers dicky too, yes my relay is there.

  8. Perhaps its sticking - whats a "gas furnace".

  9. Me Sir, Me Sir! Can I be the pedant? It's a furnace run on gas, sir.

    Majorhangover likes this.
  10. My second guess would be Propex or Eberspacher or Webasto.

  11.
do you know what it is then? Pedantic eh!!! you aint seen nothin yet fat boy!

  12. so what was your first guess "a furnace run on gas!" well that clears it up for me - ta!

  13. I think Austin has a riviera. In which case it'll be a Coleman gas furnace. ;)

  14. Do you know what it is then? Pedantic eh! You ain't seen nothing yet fat boy! (Which, as a double negative, would imply that I have seen something) :D

  15. And Im pedantic!!!! Silly sausage. In all seriousness though Im intrigued. I came across a heater a number of years ago which I wasnt brave enough to fit to my bus which was like an Eber and im sure it said "furnace" on the thing. The question was my opening shot in finding out what the guy had. Your response was a little patronising even if said in a humorous way and why would you have an issue in me asking the question anyway?

  16. Thanks for not giving me a patronising response. I will google and have a look. Ta

  17. I had a something similar in my turret top Westy back in the 80's it was connected to the cooker gas and lived under the floor but was accessed from inside under the carpet.
I was never brave enough to start it up, I used to use the gas cooker for heat and turn it off before sleeping. (How lucky was I?)
I have no issue with ANY question EVER, that is the nature of the forum, it was a humourous response to a simple question, nothing more, nothing less and certainly not intended to be offensive in any way. (unlike references to my not insubstantial weight). In future I shall refrain from making humourous comments in reply to your posts and just stick to larking about with the others. :)

  18. Apologies for sense of humour failure and Im fat and ugly so got you trumped there! I misunderstood what you wrote and now feel a bit of a Twonk!. Write what you want with impunity, I wont be making the same mistake again!

  19. If you pm me an email addy I can send you a PDF on the furnace.
I can't put it on here from my phone.

  20. Apologies accepted and returned from me, I should perhaps be a little more conservative with my replies, I forget that we don't all have the same sense of humour on here.
I also forget that I have no keyboard cam and that people cannot see me laughing and smiling away whilst typing. It is difficult to convey the 'nature' of a comment in print. Smilies help but not always. (I would kill for an Internationally recognised 'sarcasm' font)
That said, it's great that two people can have a reasoned discussion without resorting to violence and tantrums (you should go look on Vzi sometime), it's one of the reasons I love TLB, a huge collection of properly decent people, self policing and as such the community weeds out the bad eggs, they know they are not welcome and would not survive. :)
