Another solar question - non VW

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SkutterBob, Dec 2, 2018.

  1. My brother has a decent burger van business going and he would like to save some money from running a generator all the time by getting a leisure battery to run lights etc and a solar panel on the roof. Most of the setup has been discussed before but I have one question:

If my brother wants to top up the battery from the generator, he can plug in a 240v mains charger. Does he have to isolate the solar circuit first?

    Cheers

I presume he is going to ‘top up’ the battery using a battery charger. So no need to isolate the solar panels.

  3. no, no need to isolate battery from solar when charging from a mains battery charger

  4. Hi,

Great - simple then. He was worried that the mains charger would damage the solar circuit.

    Thanks

  5. No, it's how I have mine connected in the van, the mains charger is only going to kick out a max of 14v ish and the charge controller will stop that back feeding to the panels
