Thank you Where should that socket be then? Do you mean put a terminal on it and just plug it straight onto the coil? Might snip it though, if its not doing a lot Cheers guys
The socket should be in the engine bay top right corner........you could connect a terminal as you say but I'd snip it off as the diagnostic socket is pretty pointless these days, wasn't exactly state of the art stuff back then.
Ahhh, you lead me to another one, is this something to do with it, if so what are theses chopped off wires for
That's the chap. I've still got mine hooked up but as I've no idea how the diagnostic box is supposed to work it's no use to me (and also confused the hell out of me when I put my engine back in a few months back!)
@Paul Weeding just looked at my other thread about a wire and said that might be diagnostic as well this is it here Bit blurred http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/what-is-this-for.33576/#post-578472 Thanks for looking
Heres some info........ http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/htm/plug.htm I'd leave it be personally........if it aint broke etc......
Good site, thanks, bookmarked When you say leave it, do you mean don't try and fix it all or you wouldn't chop any out
Cool, no purist here just trying to get rid of all the crap thats been chopped about Found this on the samba about removing it or using it, now i know what it is http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4769621 Had a link the manuals for the diagnostics http://classicvw.org/gallery2/v/partsbook/Autoscan-Diagnostics/autoscan_page_7.jpg.html And the wiring plan where it all goes
It is very good on there, i only end up on it when i google things, it always pops up with something Thanks for your help
This thread got me thinking, so I had a look thru my vans old documents and came up with the original diagnostic punch card booklet, the cards had holes in which according to which service was due tested various things, mine was done up to 18,000 miles or 3 yrs, apparently they were free.......it still has cards for up to 60,000 miles or 10 yrs, which funnily enough you had to pay for, hence them still being there!!!
Cool, nice piece of history have and at least the plugs did get used at some point in there life I wonder if anyone still has anything that plugs into it ?
I recall the unit VW used to supply to dealers was a hideously expensive contraption on castors. There's nothing you can gain by using the diag socket - it was pretty primitive stuff.
I was thinking about just tracing the wires back and removing it, most of its not connected and i think all the live bits that go to it have been removed, at least i know what i was and that its safe to remove
