Considering my options with a possible change of mind. I have refurbished two 1800cc heads 41/34 new valves, guides and machined where necessary. I'm about to change the exhaust studs and noticed a small crack in the exh stud housing. Its made me sit back and think about reliability, longevity of older heads 40+ years old, and im getting no younger. Should I cut my losses? Would or should I consider purchasing new? 39.3/32, what are the pros and cons? Has anybody a preference for CB or AMC John
AA for me though nowt wrong with good originals, as I'm sure you know mine are 50 years old and happily supporting a 2.4L engine. They were 1700 heads. Others will have differing opinions but I set out specifically to use as many original parts as I possibly could.
I’d stick with the originals. If they haven’t really cracked after 40 years, unlikely they’re going to. A helicoil might reinforce you exhaust stud crank.
I wouldn’t worry about a small crack in the exhaust stud boss but show us a pic of the crack. And for a car engine unless you buy modified heads with larger valves the VW 1800 ‘big valve’ heads will be better for the C35 cam.
Thank you all for the responses. Ive purchased a M9 x 1.25 tap and a stepped stud, much cheaper that two new heads
