Am I overheating?

  1. First Post on here hopefully you guys can help, normally on EarlyBay (hope you don’t hold that against me!) I have a Type IV 2.0L ‘Pankage’ Engine in my 72 Crossover, SDVA Dissy and Webber Progressive and I ‘think’ its overheating....

    Symptoms
When hot there is a noise (rattling, metallic) when I put my foot on the accelerator. Once the van cools then it drives fine, 5 mins into journey it starts again. Worse uphill. When on the motorway I can get it to ‘rattle’ without it being in gear, seems worse when in gear.

This lead me to believe that it is overheating, other comments welcome on these symptoms.

    Work Completed

I knew that there was a possibility that the carb was set a bit rich, so I corrected this – made no difference. Check the timing, and although it was previously set to 7.5 BTDC when we checked it was 4 ATDC for some reason! This would have caused overheating, have rectified timing yesterday and has also made no difference. The engine does not have a thermostat, which I will rectify soon – flaps to my mind are open as the spring is in place and has tension, can push with my thumb and it springs back.
This morning I am going to re-time with vac on dissy disconnected and plugged and set to 28 BTDC @ what ever the revs should be (we only timed at idle yesterday). Also going to do the tune up procedure on the carb again.

  2. I had a similar thing turned out to be the electric fuel pump..have you got all your tin ware and seals in place

  3. Yep tin wear ok. Fuel pump is manual i believe

  4. Our old mech fuel pump is still in place but not connected . You will need to get underneath to find the source of the noise. Check for loose drive shafts or wheel bearings

  5. Thanks, but as I say I can create the noise whist not in gear, and it does it only when warm. Would rule out driveshafts would it not?

  6. Ahhhggh, timing and carb to spec. If I really push on the pedal (so second chock open on carb) its very loud, is this pinking??!!? getting myself convinced this is fuel air related...

  7. had a similar prob with mine once warmed up on tickover could hear a rattling noise turned out to be a pushrod that had managed to shorten itself . kinda melted abit , but easy fix just new rod and recheck valve clearances and it was fine ... but it did sound nasty and i feared the worst ..:)
just noticed lol mine was a type 1 , don t know whether this matters

  8. i thinks its pinking too as stated by andyo, in my case it turned out to be the carb was set up wrong..(wasnt a twin carb set up)
so it maybe timing set up or fuel set up it incorrect...when did it start? did it develop over time ? have you recently changed anything that may have caused this. the side effect could be the over heating not the cause. ..good luck finding it as i maybe wrong

  9. Yes, carb has been off recently, as we had an unrealted issue which we were trying to track - my next step would be to check the carb float level, but no time next week, hoping I can get a specialist onto it as hoping to go to camper jam on Friday........!

  10. just another thought...is the vacuume pipe/hose connected ok to the distributer

  11. Yes vac hose connected, had to take off to time it. advances with it on as well. timed to 28 degrees, with vac off which meant 4 btdc at idle. Connected advance, now advances to 40 btdc - which I understand to be correct.

  12. Would there be anyway that the choke on my webber progressive could cause this if incorrectly set?

  13. when you think its at its hottest can you hold the dipstick ? or is it to hot to hold ? Rattle could be other things and not pinking . Get it warm and with your head in the engine bay listen and pinpoint the rattle ... could be anything from wrong oversize oil filter knocking the engine bar ,broken valve spring to a missing escaped rattle snake !

  14. May sound silly, where do hold the dipstick to check temp? Where its been in the oil? Engine does smell a bit, and pings a bit when ive jyst switched her off, seems hot to me. Going to check the carb tonight, got it off this morning. Booked in for somone to take a look in the AM, will post back with findings...

  15. I had a vespa that holed a piston due to pinking/knocking. The carb was rubber mounted onto the manifold and had split allowing more air in than normal. It was a very small split and very hard to see. Personally i'd rebuild the carb and refit with new gaskets, rubbers etc just to make sure.

I am guessing that lhi1281 meant at the handle. The VW is oil cooled in reality and if the dipstick is too hot to handle at the handle then this would be a clue that its overheating. What is the average oil temp for a VW? Anyone?

I also stripped and rebuilt a GSX1100 katana engine, had a crank checked and balanced due to a rattle at the bottom end. This was expensive. Turned out to be a £25 cam chain tensioner blade that was rattling. A 1/2 fix too. So check, check and triple check all rattly things. Pinpoint the rattle if possible.

  16.
  17. Well I checked the oil the first time it happened, and topped it up (slightly low) and I dont recall it being too hot to touch. Hmm, if its not overheating maybe 'Jive' was right re. driveshaft / cv joint....

  18. Does it "rattle" when the engine's under load? Might be pinking. I'd check the ignition timing yet again.

PS Go for a run, then pull a plug out to check the colour.

  19. Yes snotty, thats the kiddie - I (still) belive it to be pinking as well. Chap I am going to see in the AM mentioned timing, although I belive I am in spec (max adv, with vac 40 degrees) will check again.

  20. Just an update, I have been timing the van to the wrong mark on the pully, which would have set the timing too advanced, thus the issues. Set correctly by Paul Miller @ Happy Harpics and all seems good in the hood. My co-owner claims that he was using the correct timinv mark though.....so although she seems better I may not be out of the woods, will have to take her for a long run to see whats what...

Thanks for the responses thus far
