Alternator woodruft key slot damaged

  1. Hello all

I am soon to start putting my motor back together. I tried to remove my fan from my alternator to paint the mount and clean the fan but seem to have damaged the post that sticks out the alternator which holds the woodruff key.
Is this fixable or is it a new alternator?

You can fix that by knocking it back down whith a hammer and filing any imperfections off

  3. I've filed it down, but now the hole is slightly wider which means the woodruff key now doesn't stay in the slot

Yeah that's the reason for knocking it to shape with a hammer first, to try to get the material somewhere close to where its means to be, if you file off all the material it may not be possible to fix, how does the woodruff key fit?

  5. once the fan is on the key cant get out. If it keeps moving when putting the fan on use a dab of something sticky to hold it still. eg Heavy grease.

The key will have sideways movement which eventually cause the fan to come loose.

If they key and keyway is damaged, why not get a small modellers file and clean the slot out as best you can then make a new key up to suit the slightly larger slot. If your worried about it coming loose, pop a dab of bearing bond in..it will work fine.

  8. MorkC68 I don't have the skills to make a new key, I could file it down to make sure he pulley wheel goes back on the shaft, could I then use an epoxy chemical metal to bond the key in place?
