Alternator woes

  1. Battery's not charging, I have no ignition light, bulb changed for known worker, still no ign light. I spotted this from an earlier post......

The charge dash warning light is live on one side of the bulb with the key in the on postion.
The outher side of the bulb goes to the regulator (internal or external)in the engine bay and to earth so bring on the light.

When the engine is running at a suitable speed the regulator switch's over and puts a Pos supply on the wire to the dash.

As the bulb now has a pos on one side and a pos on the other side the bulb goes out.

    To test
Check the bulb has a pos supply on one side with the ignition on

On the alternator or regulator find the small wire, with the ignition on pull this wire off and the dash warning light should go out.

    A couple of questions:-
where does the supply come from ? I have only one wire how does it does it get pos on either side ?should it be 12v ? is the wire one continous run from the alternator ? thanks in advance...........

  2. There should be one wire which goes directly from the Alternator to one side of the "charging" light and an ignition switch fed +ve to the other. At rest and with the ignition on, a multimeter will register 0V between that small terminal on the Alternator and ground ie the metal body. With the engine running, the same measuring point will indicate 12V. In effect what happens is once the alternator field is energized that connection point changes its polarity then, as said before, the charging light is 12V to ground on both sides so goes out.

    Hope that helps.

On the back of the dash the metal plate the battery and oil lamps are mounted on is the positive this is insulated from the rest of the metal dash.

  4. Thanks guy's, now I understand how it works it makes faulting easier, any how it's all good now healthy charge from the alternator. The fault was the.........ignition bulb holder. Glad I didn't rush out and buy a new alternator....Thanks again.

  5. sure this is an "old" post thou" the guy nailed it ! (see my more recent posts re no ign light , ) done all the replacing terminals , continuity cable tests , etc and replaced the bulb holder ! was 24 hrs away from buying a new voltage regulator !!
