Alternator wiring - Novice

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by WillP, Dec 4, 2013.

  1. Progress being made!... Wiring now, I am pretty novice when it comes to electrical, well pretty novice all round, but especially electrical...

I'm assuming the new 55 amp alternators from JK come with an internal regulator so I need to get rid of the existing external regulator, right?

At the regulator I'm slightly confused about which wires to splice, which to get rid of etc..

I've attached a pic of what I think needs to happen, is this right?

Once I've sorted the regulator end, up to the alternator... I assume the fat Red wires goes to the large screw/bolt connection, the thin green to the D+ spade terminal, and the brown earth cable to the screw connection.... that right?

I have a black cable left over which was on the same connector as the fat red wire on my old dynamo, what happens to that??

    Couple more questions...

Will the fat red cable from the alternator need increasing in size due to higher output than the dynamo?

When splicing the cables are Schotchlok splice blocks OK to use use or is it better to get the soldering iron out? I've seen a few 'mechanical splices' or 'bugs' talked about which would appear to be a more robust solution that the scotchlok but can't seem to find anywhere that sells them.

hope this all makes sense, and thanks in advance for any tips.

    cheers

That probably answered your questions but in my opinion Scotchlok connectors are a failure waiting to happen; when it’s dark, freezing cold, wet and when you are late getting somewhere.

  3. Make your splice connections, soldered and heat shrink sleeved.
