Alternator stand oil filler question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by chrisniclia1, Apr 3, 2016.

  1. Should there be a condensation tube on this oil filler ?
Been running over a year with out one.
Will it cause a problem if there isn't one fitted?
    Cheers for any advice[IMG]

  2. You might have had some oil splatting out of it.
Originally had a breather tube going up to the oil filled air filter.
Rota the black oil filler part through 180 deg so the 1/2" take off is at the top.

  3. Hi EggBoxes
I meant the long condensation tube that comes from the filler and out of the bottom of the tinware.
I've seen that type on other 1600 engines and wondered if I didn't have one would it cause a problem.

  4. The tube is your crankcase breather. It'll either go down through the tinware or (more likely) be connected to the air filter housing, depending on year. Your heating will be extremely smelly if it's not connected, as it'll be sucking in crankcase fumes.

  5. Later engines didn't have the tube down through the tinware just the breather pipe off to the air box

  6. I read somewhere they stopped using the down pipe to meet environmental regulations. No oil dripping directly to the ground

  7. You got better emissions performance if you fed the fumes into the airbox to be burnt, rather than just venting them to the outside world.

The filler I had on mine had both the down tube and a connection to the air filter. The down tube would originally have had a rubber fitting on the end that you had to squeeze to let the oil out, presumably in a controlled fashion into your drip tray. I suspect that was a get round, vw knowing that the first thing you'd do is pull the rubber bit off, but they'd satisfied the rules.

  9. I think I have one with that rubber/plastic thingy still on....nice to know what it's for!!!!
