Alternator pulley alignment

  1. I'm trying to progress with the alternator conversion but got in a bit of a pickle with longing up the alternator pulley.

The alternator pulley is sitting further out than the original causing the belt to be out of alignment. It's pretty marginal but not right.

Looks like the alternator can go back on the pedestal by about 4/5mm which would solve the problem, but can't push the shroud back far enough and tighten it to get the alternator to sit where I need it to.

Do you have any tips? Would loosening the engine tinware screws help to make the shroud slightly more manoeuvrable?

Is it just a Illegitimate child of a job or is there a knack?

I got the JK conversion kit, alt pulley is bugpack 'spin tru' pulley which was very tight on the shaft and needed knocking on with a socket and mallet. I've read about grinding the back of the pulley down to allow it to sit closer to the alternator but that sounds a bit iffy to me...

You can see the problem in the last picture which is common.
Grind a bit off the stand.

  3. Cheers Zed. Are you referring to the bit where the lugs on the bottom of the alternator look like there hitting the stand? I know it looks like they're touching it in the photo but they're not when viewed at a different angle. if I can shove it back a bit more and the lugs /stand do interfere with each other would it not be better to grind the end of small lugs off or does it not make much difference? stand or lugs, tomato/tomato...o_O

  4. Also...it may just be image distortion on the pic, but it looks like your alternator isn't sitting square, relative to the crank pulley.
One method is to loosen the alt stand nuts, the tinware screws and the alt band clamp....Clamp a square edge solidly across both pulleys and snug down the bolts/screws/clamp band by increments....or remove the new alt pulley heat the centre with a blow torch and refit...
