Alternator Conversion

  1. GGGRRRRRRRRRRR

Had the engine out to fix the oil leak in the bell housing and decided to do the alternator conversion as they dynamo has broken again! All went well until the carb is fouling the side of the alternator even with the 10mm spacer. Also they don't mention (although I should have realised) that the studs on the bottom of the carb will be too short with the spacer there.

Anyone else found this and have a work around?

  2. Can u grind a little off the bottom of the base of the carb - think this is what I did if my memory serves me correctly, although it was a few yrs ago - think mine was only fouling by a bit, but I didn;t use the 10mm spacer - not sure what carb you are running but I had a weber progressive 32/36 on mine.

You mean the accelerator pump linkage hits the alternator? Bend it, grind a wee bit off the nut, grind a bit off the alternator, chuck the spacer. :)

  4. Already started bending it but worried about grinding a bit off the alternator in case it doesn't work and then my warranty will be buggered.

I'm running a Marmitety bocar carb at the moment with fuel bubbling at the throttle bushes - somewhere I have a Solex but it needs rebuilding and with a TR7 and an MGB in the full throws of restoration I don't have time. Anyone got a contact that could rebuild it for me?

  6. I ended up taking the linkage off and reversing it so it didn't foul the alternator, still get full movement....made me wonder afterwoods why some places sell spacer kits ?

  8. I'll nip out tmrw and see what I can do photo wise, When I did it, I took it off and took it indoors ,looked at it and scratched my head for a while then eureka 8)

Had this on my harddrive, but dunno if you can see any difference with the accelerator pump linkage on this and one that hasn't been reversed ?

  10. Thanks for the pic. Spent a bit of time head scratching and trying the leavers in different positions but couldn't make it work. In the end I bend it as fas as it would go with grinding the thread off the screw and a bit off the head plus I used the spacer and it just clears now! Just need to swap the bell housing and get the engine back in.

Just double check full throttle. That's where it'll get stuck and it's a tad embaressing.
