air con in a bay?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Diddymen, Jul 23, 2013.

  1. I know some bay's had air con back in the day, and I believe this is a fairly rare optional extra?

....but with all the heat we've had lately....my mind has been wandering :D

I've seen some off the shelf kits for beetles from the states which are over £1500  ....and I've occasionally spotted original aircon fittings on ebay...again for silly money

....so for an intellectual engineering exercise I was wondering if you could cobble some bits together from a breakers yard and get air con for under £300??? .....I'm unlikely to ever get round to doing this BTW

    discuss :)

  2. Man size nappy=£3 ice cubes=£0. Works for me.

  3. Forget it.

  4. Should be easy enough ,rob all the bits from a donor car but the bhp drain would kill the drive . ambulance fans or quarter lights or both .

  5. Open windows for me .

  6. Swamp cooler?

  7. Yep, ambulance fans do keep you a bit cooler.

I've got an early with a TDI engine in it... We've been camping in France and Italy recently and it's hot hot hot even at night. I've been thinking of doing it too. We camped next to a guy with a t5 at one site who would flick the van over at 10 at night for just 10 minutes, whack the ac on full blast and it would stay nice and cool all night.

I'm going to get all the bits and wire it all up but get an ac specialist to plumb it up once everything is in place.

Going to get the compressor and bracket that fits my engine (might have to move my air filter!), find a condenser that fits between the inner sill and chassis rail (my rad is between the two chassis rails) and get a heater box that incorporates an ac evaporator and heater matrix (might as well with a water cooled engine!) to sit up the front, under the dash.

  10. I would love to know how that works out pow?

I do vehicle AC for a living and I am struggling to work out how it would fit!!

  11. I also gave this a thought.

Vintage Speed do a compressor bracket. Here

Sill looks as if could be tough to fit though.

  12. if you put your mind to it you can get anything to fit ,be it turbo, super charger ,air con etc

Can I just ask a question - does the condenser have of a certain size? Before I start buying parts, can you confirm I can mix and match like I'm planning on doing?

  14. i would just buy a scrap car with a/c and rob every thing , that way you know it all works with each other and just a few brackets to fit ..easy :)

I'm deffo gunna have a stab at fitting, try to spend as little as possible on it for now to see if I can get it working.

  16. Me I am more interested in how to heat the Bus in winter
