Air and Fuel Pipes

  1. Hi all,
On start up and after filling with fuel, the cab of my single carb 1600 '77 bay window will usually smell of petrol for a little while. I read somewhere that the T-piece in the engine bay would be likely culprit so I bought new one. Then went to see where it would be. I found two metal pipes at the rear of the engine bay near the hatch, barely held together by a piece of corroded rubber, similar in shape to my new T-piece. However, there is two pipes to join, but three holes to fill in the t-piece? What goes on the third part of the T? Ive put a screw in there for now just to see if that will stop the fumes but id like to do things properly where fuel is concerned.
Does it go to the big black air filter box on the right of the engine bay? If so where? I have a number of ports that don't appear to be employed. Would it be possible for someone to post a picture of what an air box should like?
Ive hopefully attached pictures of the old T-piece and new one with screw. I will add my air box too, many thanks in advance.

  2. The part you have blocked off should go back into the top of your carb air filter also you should not block it as it’s the breather for the petrol tank.

  3. Thanks Ian, I didn't think blocking it was a good idea. I'll get some hose this morning. Then try and identify the carb air filter!!

  4. If this one has failed you should also check/replace all the other joins in breather pipework.

The one that looks like a pig to get to (red on that diagram) is up behind the spare wheel well. Taking the rear light fitting out makes it really easy.

  8. Great tip cheers
