Advice on where to put the consumer unit

  1. Hello,

I'm just about to install 240v hook-up and I'm a bit stumped as to where to put the consumer unit.

Don't want to install it on a flammable surface so current thinking is under the r-r bed in the slope bit of the bulkhead.

    What have others done???

My van is a walkthru converted RHD panel van with a full width r-r bed and a weekend unit (sink, cooker, fridge) behind the driver seat along the side of the van.

Why wouldn't you fix it to a flammable surface?
If its fitted correctly you'll be absolutely fine and you won't risk drilling into your fuel tank!

  3. ^this. The unit's not going to get hot or burst into flame, honest...

  4. I was thinking of domestic electrical installation guidelines when considering the flammmable surface thing.

So I assume others have it installed in things like cupboards and wardrobes (that must be flammable as they are made of wood)??

  10. Jobs a good 'un - I'll put it where its handy - on a wooden surface.

    Thanks for the replies.

  11. Do that! A greater danger in my mind would be putting it somewhere where folk are exposed to the mains, or somewhere where water could get into it. Then you really would have probs.

Under the bed or at the back of a cupboard as long as its not in the same space as the gas supply and in a correct ip rated box cant see the flammable surface being a issue

  13. haha! reckon that'll be where mine ends up when i get round to fitting it (presuming i ever get my bus back) :(

  14. mine is on the wooden front panel under the RNR also.

  15. Is rolling+mains really a good idea :)...?

  16. oh. i was thinking of putting it under the bed opposite side from the propex? i don't have any other cupboards :(

  17. Consider whether you're going to pee the bed at night, with mains underneath you...
