Adjusting Hydraulic Lifters

  1. I've never done this job before so looking for advice from some of the engine gurus. I have a Type 4 engine with hydraulic lifters. Due to a slight oil leak, I've changed the push rod tube seals. Do I just need to torque down the rocker arms, fit new seal to cover, fit cover - job done or do I need to adjust the valves? I've read conflicting information on many of the VW sites. Some say you need to, others say you don't. If I do need to do them, is there a simple procedure? I've read Richard Atwell's guide on adjustment but it seemed complex and went well 'over my head' for engine knowledge. Simplistically, is it just a matter of setting to TDC for each cylinder, running the adjusting screws in until they are just touching the valves, then turning them in another 1.5 turns, lock them off and repeat for each cylinder?

  2. Hi Steve

The above is the way I have been doing mine.I run the engine for around 10 mins prior as this seems to ensure the lifters are 'pumped' up.

No need to run the engine, there are springs inside the lifters, but yes just as you describe. Once done, this isn't part of your regular service, but if the engine is new to you, you should certainly set them, I see lots of rattling mistakenly gapped hydraulic engines.

  4. Thanks @skirk and @zed, got them sorted
