Accelerator Pedal Return Spring

  1. I have just replaced mine as the previous one had long since rotted away. Have to say the new one (from JK) is feeble - it is made of pretty thin wire and does not really have the oomph to spring the pedal back up - remains of the old one looked a lot thicker wire. Also the loop at the top doesn't engage anywhere on the back of the pedal - I assume that this is how they are meant to be.

Anyone else have a nice springy pedal or is it just the way it is? Maybe a need a better quality spring.

  2. There were several types over the years - which is yours? I suspect the JK spring is back-to-front ie the wrong type.

  3. Thanks Snotty - mine is the middle one on the right hand column - 78.

My hinge 10A is fitted the other way around (and welded to floor) so I think that is the root of the problem - only the loop at the top of the spring is in contact with back of pedal. I don't have any seats at the moment so can't go for a test drive, but engine seems to rev ok so I may just have to live with a floppy pedal - it must have been like it for the few years I have had the van, but it is only when you start fiddling that you upset things. Hopefully I will get seats back from trimmer on Friday and can see if it is driveable as is or whether I need to do further work.

  4. You may find the JK has the end bit curving in the wrong direction. Curiously, I bought mine from JK years ago, and it was the right one! Most frustrating.

Worth getting your pedal sorted out - works well enough when everything's right.

  5. Spring I have is as per the diagram. So I had to fit it back to front relative to the pedal. I am going to cut the loop off the top so that the wire sits in the groove in the back of the pedal and see if that helps (at the moment, only the loop contacts the pedal)

Last resort is that I have a spare hinge so I could whip off the old one and fix the new one the right way around with a couple of self tappers.

You are all a bit posh my pedal hinge is a gate hinge welded to the floor and pedal no spring at all

  7. Lol. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I only had to disturb mine because the new carpet didn't fit  .

How is your engine coming along - you got your stuff back from the machine shop yet?

  8. the hinge on mine is bolted, had same prob ,don't know your specific bus set up ,on mine I reckon a po had changed the linkage from pedal, making it/installing an adjustable <scew up-screw down rod, which ,once adjusted along with slack in cable is now pretty much fine.
