Accelerator Linkage

    Got myself I little predicament....

I striped my accelerator linkage down in the can to get it pwdercoated at the weekend and in doing so took hammer to the little threaded end of the linkage below and distorted it... schoolboy error!

Never fear, I spotted a replacement linkage on VW Heritage, clicked and the shiny silver one arrived today...

Despite being listed as the same year the new one has a very different linkage and the bar through the middle is probably 1mm less in diameter so I suspect it will rattle in the housing.

So, is this linkage going to work or do I have to send it back and start searching for a used one?! I've not got the other parts back from the powdercoaters so can't trial fit the new one to see how it works!!

    Cheers in advance, Andy.

  2. Can you not use a thread file then run a tap down the thread on your old linkage?

It's an option, but I'm not sure I'm all that mechanically astute to do it!

  4. Typical of heritage! Got to be easier to rethread it.

  5. I think you have a bottom right and they have sent you a top right

Ah, that old "I have a 76 bay built in June 75 with parts from a much later van" trick... pah!

    Will have another look around!!

  7. Do you know anyone with a lathe they would sort it,
    in a about 20 mins ;)

Right, thought to myself "if its broke you're not going to be any worse off for trying" so...

Filed the end down a little twiddled the tap (or die, I'm no engineer) a bit, got fed up, found an M6 bolt, just about caught a thread, tapped it with a hammer a bit, screwed hard...

    Screwed harder....

    And...

    Ta da!

Please excuse my joyous outburst but tapping a thread on a bar is new territory for me!! The only downside is this bit didn't go for powder coating with the rest!

  9. Its the wrong part. Simples. If youve resurrected yours then send it back!!

    On it's way ;)

  11. A top tip for doing this kind of thing with a bolt: saw two slits across the ends of the bolt at 90* to each other. Turns the bolt into a little die, and the slits get rid of the swarf :)
