Ok where am I going wrong. I spent nearly 2 hours arsing around with this sodding thing and am no closer to getting it in. The steering column has a rubber bush, followed by a washer followed by a circlip. It seems that the bush might need compressing somewhat to have a chance of it fitting together. Help!!

Does anyone have a pic of their accelerator pedal in the “fully open” position? I just want to check that mine is ok as it seems quite far from the floor when pressed (I’ve a buttys bit linkage fitted)

  6. Sorry can’t help with either as your steering is earlier than mine and although I have the accelerator pedal in the van it’s not connected to owt

No worries. Think I’ll take the seat down tomorrow and see how it feels when fully depressed. The linkage goes to the floor but the pedal is way off. I figure as long as it feels ok and gives full throttle it’ll be fine.

  8. If there’s owt I can measure for you or any pics you need shout up
It will give me an excuse to take the cover off and have a brew sat in the bus

Can you post pics of your accelerator linkage? There were a few variants over time

And this is what ours looked like. Think I may have angled it slightly too much to the right. I’ll have a play tonight. Looking at buttys pic I suspect it’s not designed for the pedal to go to the floor.

  12. Mine sits up high too and looks nothing like buttys picture. I bought a pre cut cab mat to get the pedal in the correct position.
    But it seems to work.

Best way I found for the throttle is

Check the cable it slack enough so that the carb butterfly had not being moved by it
Then have someone push the pedal down and look at the carb to see if the butterfly is fully vertical then adjust the stop on the pedal at that point

Like Matty said put your foot fully down on your pedal ..and see in the engine bay if your throttle is fully open .
The pedal i bought for mine had a bendable bracket you adjust to stop you from pushing it down to far ....well i think it was for that .

  15. Hey Jim, what year is yours and did you replace the cab floor?
Looks the same mechanism as mine, but the rod going across cab floor should be right at the front of cab floor, ie in front of steering column

There's quite a bit of variation over the years I think. Ours is a late '72. I've sorted the pedal now! Will update blog shortly.

  17. And mine has a black plastic cover over the rod....which fits snugly up to the bottom of the kickbpanel

The bits I sent off to the powder-coaters last week were ready to pick up yesterday. This included all of the engine tinware and a huge stack of bits for the cab. For the amount of stuff I sent to them it was great value for money and has saved lots of time:

I also have a box of bits at the platers to save me having to clean them up which are ready to collect tomorrow (striker plates etc). I’m now in a great position for building up the dash area, so here we go!

Powder-coated foot controls, plus a butty’s bits throttle linkage good to go:

    Pedals bolted in:

I had a small meltdown over the throttle pedal not looking right. I finally realised what was wrong this evening. The new hinge I’d bought was substantially different to the original one I’d used when fitting the weld-nuts as it sat a lot lower to the floor (original on the pedal, new one in front):

With the original hinge fitted instead I’m happy with the position (I’ll leave this on for now, but will source a new one as this one is a little rusty)

Washer bottle back in with new hoses and powder-coated bracket:

    Handbrake lever back in:

After longer than I’d care to admit I got the lock housing back onto the steering column. The secret? Put the bush, washer and circlip in the lock housing, then slide it up the steering column rather than down (the top of the column is a larger diameter):

And finally started re-assembling the dash itself:

Powder-coat makes everything look brand new!

    I do love this resto!!

Washer bottle.... have you considered an upgrade to one with an electric pump while you’re at this stage?
