A better type of fuel filter?

  1. I've always run my VWs with the cheap plastic fuel filters you can get everywhere for under a £1.
    This type:

But as they never seem to filter out the really fine dust that seems to get into the carb so i've been wondering if fitting one of the fuel filters for a fuel injected vehicle as they have better filtration would be a good idea?

Or has anyone else got any other ideas.

  2. i have never tried it but as the modern FI systems use a higher pressure than a carb you may have fuel delivery problems.
try it and see what happens

Fuel injection systems still get the dust stuff - I have to clean the fuel injectors on my Golf out on occasion.

I'm with Aussiebay - those filter systems are designed to be force push/pulled and you will be putting strain on the pump at the least.

Maybe there is a middle ground - look at the performance filters they use for racing cars with carbs maybe?

My motorbike doesnt run a filter at all - and uses carbs.

  4. Cheers.
I might have a look at those cleanable/rebuildable fuel filters.

  5. Halfords sell a range of disposable metal canister fuel filters you should easily find a suitable on there for around £6 :)

  6. I'll have a look when i'm in there next. I suppose any fuel filter for a carb'd car will do as long as the inlet and outlet pipes are the right size.

  8. If your concern is to catch the fine rust dust/sediment then I would suggest running (2) filters. One between the tank and pump and the other between the pump and carb/s.

Be sure and clamp all fuel lines. And FYI the German cloth braided hose is not what it used to be. Many here in the states have reported the braided fuel line as not being up to par with todays new fuels. In short...it's crap. By some good metric FI hose from your VW/Porsche dealer and use it.

  9. I've been running fuel injection hose on mine for years as i got fed up with the braded stuff going brittle after 6 months and weaping fuel.

  10. Get a magnetic one, catches most of the crap and some are even serviceable

  11. Hmm, magnetic. Sounds good. Most of the stuff that ends up in the float chamber on my carb is magnetic (rust i assume).

  13. I was thinking of removing the fuel guage sender and just chucking a big magnet into the tank to collect the floating rust.

Plus; if the dust is fine enough to get through the first filter, it'll go through the second filter....
