76 westy tent choices

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by john d, Jan 9, 2020.

  1. Hi guys just about to purchase a westy tent for my 76 and from what info i have found the
choices are basically a thick/heavy canvas from heritage or a lightweight/thin cancas from JK
can anyone give me thier thoughts on which one i should go for and the pros and cons for
    each?

    Regards jonny

  2. I know little about tents except I have slept in a few. However, you get what you pay for in life IMO

Heavy canvas is less likely to flap in the wind. I would consider: condensation, air circulation, weather proof, sound proof, flammable, UV retardant, access and egress, ease of assembly, warranty, Reviews from late bay peeps and others who have purchased similar. Look for alternatives.

    hope my meagre contribution helps.

  3. what would you buy?

Do you just mean an awning?

    edit.

    Or a roof canvas?

  5. I bought one based on what I wanted and my use.

    1. I am tight

    2. We camp in the summer

    3. We don't go to Iceland etc

    4. How much heat does a thick canvas hold to a thin one ?

Mine is a late westy as per pic a 74.

Its been fine, first one I ever fitted, it was From NLA Vw about £150

Pic coming computer is being a div

  6. yes roof tent , £150 is very reasonable do they do it in orange.

I think you’re talking about a roof canvas. They’re available in 0range but it looks like they’ve gone up a bit in price since Mick bought one https://nlavw.com/93-roof-canvas

  9. If it's a roof canvas we're talking about - get a better quality one. I bought a £150 ish one and sent it straight back, stitching was all over the place, and it was essentially made from t-shirt material. I opted for a heavy weight one from NLA and it's very good quality. It's not the kind of job you want to be doing more than once so worth investing the extra in IMO.

I’d go for thicker. If you sleep up there you’ll no doubt end up pushing up against it so the stronger the better - my nephew kicked a hole in the vent mesh one night - and the zips are a prime failure point as it’s all quite tightly fitted, and I’d think heavier fabric would be more water resistant (get some fabric proofing spray) too, which helps not only for the obvious reasons but also when folded down as it tends to be prone to mildew.

It’s not something you want to be changing every few years!
I didn’t fancy the job so paid someone else to do it (badly!).

Mine came from Rolf De Kam some years back and was made on original Westy tooling apparently but even then the zips don’t last forever.

  13. I like and have used for years is the Khyam range. The quick erect system goes up in minutes. Found them very water proof, wind proof , warm and light. The air inflated type are very heavy when packed up. HPIM2673 (2).JPG
