71 crewcab. What to look for

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, May 23, 2013.

  1. Hiya guys. I've seen a 71 crewcab that has taken my fancy and I'm going to see it on Saturday. Having only ever owned late bays I don't really know what the common problem areas are on 71 bays so any advise on what to look for would be a great help. Cheers in advance

  2. I would have thought pretty much the same areas

....obviously also check the bits that are specific to crew cabs as they will no doubt be more expensive to put right - rear corners, flat bed flooring, top hats under flat bed, drop sides, side hatch ....and every thing underneath

good luck for your viewing

any rear body panels are pick/ crewcab only, very very expensive if you can find them

rear arches ( though can be repaired with standard if not to rotten)

    battery trays
    rear corners
    locker door
    outer sills
    rear inner arches
    the load bed
    under load bed
    treasure chest seal
    rear window and seal
treasure chest door lock and catch

    are all pickup only items

you can repair the beds with van stuff if its repairable
    chassis
jacking points etc are the same

    look in the usual places,
    rear corners
    battery trays
    rear arches
    front arches
    load bed
    all the chassis
    jacking points outriggers etc
fuel tank it pickup only I think( filler neck is for sure)

  4. ^^ listen to davidoft he knows!!!! ......he's been watching a pickup rot away in his front garden for a few years now

  8. you are not worried about getting certain panels for yours?

I did buy rear bay corner for mine ,one word , nightmare ,to fit and the look after...:D

  9. if it's a double cab then there's one area that get's missed quite often. it's underneath the rear seat behind the firewalls. the fuel tank is in there. the nice vents that you see on the side of the van vent this area and the area above the wheel arch. the floor in this area fills with dust over time. Mine had an inch of dust and sand that was trapping the moisture. The join between the bed and the cab is known to rot. give it a good poke/tap. many have been filled and painted over. get up on the bed and have a walk about. look closely and check for movement / cracks. Join between the cab and rear bed bulkhead. this forms a gutter between the cab and the rear bulkhead. it's not common, but Ive seen holes in this area before and there's no easy way to sort it.
The rear corners are expensive and repro ones are hard to fit and thinner than a gnats hair. If salvagable, repair what you can.

    both front arches
    front floor complete
    both rear corners
    rear inner and outer valance
    front inner valance
    1 rear wheel tub
    2 front tubs
    jacking points
    2 complete full height arches

    various window chromes and rubbers
    front and rear bumpers

  13. Mine has all these problems and more. :(
Fortunately the rear 1/4 panels and arches look OK. Probably the only bits that do! :)
The rest is down to the skills of Paul Weeding.

  14. hehe it'll be soooooo cool once done though! and yours will be done properly unlike the 3 layers fo sills and double skin outriggers Ive just found on mine o_O

  18. We will see tomorrow. They always look good in pics lol

  19. I started one but i keep doing stuff and forgetting to take picures :( It's slow progress because I'm out on the drive and weather's not been too kind of late. getting there though. engine's coming out this weekend for a clean up. doesnt need anything just a spit and polish. I need to do the battery trays and inner and outer valance. then back in with a new gt exhaust that i got from top banana racing. I reckon it's going to stay blue for a bit, Ive decided on having a propper respray when ive saved enough.

  20. Paul Weeding has @Paradox's bus to do then a Karmann Ghia then mine,
He reckons Jan so I'm thinking March! ;)
