34 ICT Setup and Linkages.....

  1. hi everyone, i've finally got round to getting some ICT's and have got the linkage thrown together, just wanted to know if i've done it properly or not.....these pics are only of it mocked up on the spare engine in my garage, to save me doing it whilst hanging out the back of my van, ha ha.

Im gonna need some spacers for under the carb between the carb and the manifold as the hex bar cross piece fouls the alternator quite badly, so they all need raising up a bit. but other than that, is it about right??

The left hand one is wrong the vertical bar should be straight down

  3. thats kinda what i thought, but i cant see any way of doing it as the hex bar needs to finish to the left hand side of the left carb?? weird....

Your hex bar looks a bit short?
You could do better straight away, by using the adjusters to get the hex over to the left, then move the left hand lever to the left.
I pinched this from the engine bay thread - there are more (page 4 on my laptop settings)

  5. I reckon the throttle levers are wrong as they are both in different positions

  6. nah the throttle levers ar level, its just the spring isnt on properly on the right hand carb, meaning if ya look at the picture, the throttle isnt actually sut on its stop, its held open. Im gonna go and have a play now.

Does a bell crank linkage work with stock fanshroud with heater ducts??

  7. Yes to all the above! I think the CSP Belcrank linkage is excellent.

It fits with standard engine tinwear and will not foul on fan shroud. It is also easy to adjust and you should have no problems getting full throttle with it either.

    Cheers and good luck

  8. So you'd suggest i get a bell crank setup instead?? plus im guessing i'll not need carb spacers with this either???

Have you looked through this thread? Lots of shiney engine bays with every variety of engine, carbs and linkages. And they're all squeeky clean and well photographed by their proud owners so you can see what's what. There are similar threads on all VW forums if you search.

  10. yeah, i've seen that cheers matey :) though none of the pictures are big enuf or close enuf to see what i want to see :-(

On that thread, D & G has same carbs/linkage/engine as you. The operating levers on the carbs look half the length of yours - that, combined with what I suggested above, I reckon would sort it. I have same setup on a spare engine, I'll take some close-ups for you if I remember tomorrow.

  12. Yeah, i think the cheaply made linkage brackets want bending in a bit, as you say, they look pushed outwards, so if i give thema tweat, that'll narrow the distance the the hex bar has gotta cover, then i can adjust the ball ends and move the bar over effectively, then align the ends so they are both vertical.

As you say, the ones in the pics have shorter lever arms, i have left the longer ones on for now as they give more leverage, but as you say, also mean i have to move the linkage over even further to compensate for the this long arm. They do howver have a hole further in, soi i could use this to replicate the shorter arms.

here's a pic of what i've done quicly this evening.......its still not right, but its a bit better......will put too much strain on the fixings though i think....

Getting there - bound to take a bit of fettling.

  14. do you think it'll work alright with the spacer on there?? i ws thinking it might put unneeded presure on the links, but then everything is spring loaded, so its not as if its forcing anything?? so i dunno?? bit more fettling me thinks.....

I saw that - thought it would be a stage on the way. It all looks a bit out of kilter? The bracket on the carb leans out? Might you have forced it outwards over-tightening the hex adjusters? Beware the screws bracket/carb - they are quite easily stripped in the soft ali carb. The hex bar should be a little loose laterally. Also I thought the arm on the bar didn't look straight - might be the photo/lens.

I'll try remember to measure the bar legth - D & G's has very little screw adjuster sticking out the end - that would let youshuffle the arm across and loose the extension you put on it.
